Celebrating 50 Years of Galaxy Express 999: A Creative Journey with Leiji Matsumoto

Galaxy Express 999 Exhibition: A 50-Year Celebration

On June 20, 2025, the highly anticipated exhibition titled "Galaxy Express 999: 50th Anniversary Project - Journey of Creation" will open at Tokyo City View, located in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo. This event is organized by Mori Building Company and will run until September 7, 2025. To kick off this special occasion, an opening ceremony featuring notable figures associated with Leiji Matsumoto's works was held, and the excitement surrounding the exhibition is palpable.

Opening Ceremony Highlights

The opening ceremony showcased the participation of DJ KOO, idol Rika Mayama from Ebisu Chugaku, and Makiko Matsumoto, the daughter of Leiji Matsumoto and the CEO of Zero Time Company. Dressed in outfits inspired by space and the stars, they celebrated the launch of the exhibition. DJ KOO expressed his nostalgic connection to Matsumoto's works, recalling how he grew up reading Otoko Oidon. He remarked, “These works were a part of my youth. WAKUWAKU DO DANCE!” Meanwhile, Rika Mayama, a big fan of both anime and manga, noted how Matsumoto's creations transport viewers to starry worlds, saying, “Looking at the original artwork feels like being taken into space.” DJ KOO further commented on the beauty of Matsumoto's characters, particularly the intricacies of the hairlines of the women he has illustrated.

Makiko Matsumoto's Touching Remarks

As the ceremony progressed, Makiko Matsumoto took the stage to reflect on her father's immense legacy, stating, “It’s been two years and four months since my father ventured into the starry sea. This exhibition displays works ranging from unpublished pieces before his debut to the final original manuscripts of Galaxy Express 999. I hope you can feel the passion and dedication he poured into his lifetime of work.”

A Message to the Audience

When asked about their hopes for attendees, Mayama encouraged the younger generation to step away from their smartphones and journey together through space. DJ KOO added, “This exhibition is indeed a creative journey. Even if someone isn’t familiar with Matsumoto's work, they’ll feel like they’re embarking on a space adventure, making it an experience enjoyable for all ages.”

Exhibition Features and Special Experiences

The exhibition entrance features a remarkable setup displaying a platform from Galaxy Express 999 alongside a monument of the Galaxy Express 999 train, providing a unique photo opportunity. Attendees can purchase a commemorative photo package taken by a professional photographer, complete with an original photo holder for ¥1,500. Additionally, on specific days, visitors dressed as characters from Matsumoto's creations can enjoy discounted rates for their photo sessions.

A special seminar titled "Collaboration Seminar with Roppongi Astronomy Club: Universe x Railway x Zero +α" will also take place on July 5, 2025. This event aims to discuss the unique blend of space and railways in Matsumoto's works, featuring insights from astronomers and railway enthusiasts.
