CIMA's New President: John Graham
On June 18, 2025, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) unveiled John Graham, FCMA, CGMA, as its 92nd president. A dedicated professional with a rich background, Graham also serves as the Co-Chair of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. His leadership comes at a critical time, aiming to harness emerging opportunities in the financial industry within a digital landscape.
Career and Accomplishments
Graham’s extensive career largely unfolded within the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. Having held pivotal roles for various NHS organizations, including the Health Department, he has accumulated more than sixteen years in management finance—currently serving as the Financial Director at Tameside and Glossop IC NHS Foundation Trust. His concurrent role as a full-time executive leader in the NHS during his presidency is a first for CIMA. This unique position equips him with firsthand insights into public sector finance, which can benefit the organization's strategic direction.
Graham’s commitment to CIMA and the wider accounting community is evident through his prior leadership roles and advocacy. He previously championed efforts as a member and chair of several committees, focusing on standards and professional development.
Looking to the Future
In his inaugural remarks, John Graham emphasized the unpredictable nature of the present world, stressing that, despite the challenges, the accounting profession exhibits remarkable resilience. He expressed optimism about the opportunities generated by digital transformations, including the rising need for finance professionals equipped with critical thinking skills and strategic vision.
"We must look ahead to create the future of the profession, anticipating the skills, knowledge, and opportunities that will define the next generation," he stated. Graham's vision extends beyond the traditional realm of management accounting, as he plans to leverage technology trends, especially artificial intelligence, for enhancing financial practices. His initiative, titled ‘Finance and Accounting 2040: Together Towards the Future,’ will serve as a roadmap for the changes ahead.
Engaging Globally
Throughout his term, Graham intends to connect with members and candidates from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America to discuss and promote career pathways that are evolving with advancing technologies. He aims to illustrate how professionals can align their skillsets with market demands, addressing the growing internship and job opportunities arising from sustainability initiatives and technological advancements in finance.
Expressing his gratitude for the position, Graham commented, "It's an honor to lead an organization that champions trust, creates opportunities, and supports prosperity for individuals, businesses, communities, and economies worldwide. I look forward to forging paths for mutual growth and collaboration."
Besides his professional pursuits, John Graham lives in Liverpool with his wife and three children. His interests include being a non-executive director at New Directions, a leading provider of adult social care services, as well as his active participation in the educational sector as a chair of a multi-academy trust. He balances his work-life with avid travel and a passion for sports, embodying a well-rounded approach to both personal and professional commitments.
As CIMA moves forward with John Graham at the helm, the key themes of innovation, adaptability, and future growth will guide their initiatives in the financial landscape, ensuring that their members are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
