Reviving a Cherished Agricultural Legacy in Yamanashi
The cherry orchards of Yamanashi, once flourishing under the care of passionate farmers, faced an uncertain future. Aging farmers and a lack of successors left these magnificent orchards, known for their delicious cherries, on the brink of abandonment. The situation was dire; without intervention, these well-loved lands would soon be lost to neglect.
In response to these challenges, Cells Co., Ltd., a company primarily focused on developing and selling software for social insurance labor consultants, jumped into action. Collaborating with multiple software vendors, we launched the
Cherry Revival Project. Our goal was clear: to breathe new life into the almost abandoned cherry fields in the community of Makioka in Yamanashi City.
The project took off just as the cherry trees had entered a two-year period of minimal care. However, we discovered that these trees still had the potential to bear fruit if given the right attention. Despite being primarily an IT company with no agricultural background, we recognized the urgent need to step in to preserve this cherished agricultural heritage.
Taking on the Challenge: Farmers at Heart
The first face-off with the sprawling orchards reminded us of our connection to nature, as we were focused on the tech industry. With a hands-on approach, our team took part in essential farm labor — a significant challenge was
pollination. The narrow window of opportunity for the cherry blossoms to be pollinated, which is approximately one week from blooming to fruiting, made this task both critical and time-sensitive. We learned that while nature facilitates pollination, human intervention can dramatically enhance fruit development and flavor.
An additional layer of complexity was found in the cherry variety central to our efforts, the
Satto Nishiki. This particular cherry tree thrives in partnership with other varieties, such as
Takasago, making teamwork in our task crucial. As we engaged with the orchards, we knew we had to complete the pollination and prepare for the harvest, making the most of the timeframe available to us.
On a bright June day in 2026, our efforts culminated in a successful harvest, as the orchards bloomed with cherries ready for picking. The joy felt during this collective endeavor was palpable as we tasted the fruits of our labor, quite literally.
A Two-Day Cherry Picking Retreat: Digital Detox and Team Building
Aligned with our successful harvest, Cells organized a two-day cherry picking retreat. Stepping away from our daily routines filled with screens, members of the team spent valuable time in the fresh air, cultivating our connection to nature and refreshing our minds. The untouched landscape offered a pristine environment, devoid of urban distractions, inviting participants to unwind and engage with the earth directly in a form of digital detox.
In addition to the ministry of farm work, we integrated local tourism experiences into the itinerary, strengthening our bonds as a team while appreciating our surroundings. This initiative showcased the growing interest in corporate well-being and team engagement, inspiring innovative ideas for future collaborative efforts.
Insight from Our President: Masaya Kato’s Reflection
Reflecting on my first venture into farming, I discovered the remarkable experience of growing food from the ground up. Witnessing that pivotal one-week window where the cherry blossoms transitioned into fruit underscored the impact of diligent care and attention throughout this process. Every blossom carried the potential for a bountiful harvest, tailoring our outcomes in wonderfully unique ways.
Cells may not be an agricultural company, yet we stepped outside our typical scope to breathe new vibrancy into a fading landscape. This experience taught us that IT can have a meaningful connection to agriculture, where technology meets tradition to yield significant community benefits.
Future Aspirations: Sustaining Agricultural Connections
We aspire to cultivate this effort into an ongoing initiative rather than a one-time occurrence. By leveraging our unique capabilities as an IT enterprise, we seek sustainable solutions to revitalize abandoned farmland, facilitating corporate well-being while fostering community connections. With greater collaboration, our focus extends beyond mere software—we aim to showcase the potency of technology in enhancing agricultural endeavors for the greater good.
