Samsung Enhances Bixby with One UI 8.5
Samsung Electronics has recently introduced the beta program for Bixby, the company’s conversational device agent, as part of the latest One UI 8.5 update. This upgrade significantly enhances user experience by allowing individuals to ask for information in a more natural manner, making interactions with Samsung Galaxy devices even more intuitive. A crucial aspect of this update is the expanded access to real-time answers from the open web, which adds a further layer of convenience for users.
Won-Joon Choi, COO of Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) division, stated, “Since we announced our first AI phone in 2024, we've been committed to making AI easier to use for a broader audience and decided to integrate a device agent directly into the Galaxy experience. To support this, we've redesigned Bixby to allow for more natural dialogues and intuitive device operation, thereby reducing barriers in everyday tasks.”
Intuitive Device Operation through Natural Conversation
The new Bixby allows users to control their Samsung Galaxy devices using everyday language, eliminating the need for precise command inputs or specific terminology. Users no longer have to learn the structure of device menus or memorize specific terms; instead, they can explain what they want in their own words. For instance, if a user states, “I don’t want the screen to time out while I'm looking at it,” Bixby will comprehend this request and immediately turn on the “always ON while browsing” setting. This streamlines the process, enabling users to focus on the task at hand without worrying about navigation through settings or remembering function names.
Bixby does not only provide generic descriptions; it also identifies the current settings of the device and suggests various solutions. This functionality reduces trial and error, enabling quicker task completion even for users who might not be familiar with the device or its features. If a user asks, “Why is the screen always on even when it’s in my pocket?” Bixby will display relevant settings related to malfunction prevention, allowing users to correct the issue with just a few taps.
Real-Time Web Search Feature
Another significant component of the Bixby upgrade is its support for real-time web searching. Leveraging the Perplexity feature, users can access the latest information instantly, with search results being displayed within Bixby’s unique user interface. This integration means users can search for topics and find answers without being redirected to separate browsers or applications, maintaining a seamless user experience focused on current tasks at hand.
For example, if a user queries, “Find hotels in Seoul with a children’s pool,” Bixby will accurately process this request and display relevant web search results directly in its interface, enabling the user to explore available options without interruptions or delays.
Availability of the Update
The latest Bixby update as part of One UI 8.5 is currently available in several countries, including Germany, India, South Korea, Poland, the UK, and the US, with plans for further expansion. For more information about Bixby, users can visit Samsung.com.
