Haikem Strikes MOU for Fuel Cell Bus Initiative in Sarawak, Malaysia

Haikem Corporation, a global chemical trading firm and manufacturer based in Minato, Tokyo, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Biaramas Express Sdn Bhd, a major bus operator in the Sarawak region of Malaysia. This partnership aims to promote and facilitate the introduction of fuel cell buses (FC buses) in Sarawak, utilizing both companies' strengths to enhance public transportation.

With this MOU, Biaramas will leverage its extensive knowledge of local bus operations and vast vehicle network. In addition, Haikem will contribute its expertise in hydrogen transportation technology and advanced alkaline water electrolysis systems, in collaboration with Chinese FC stack suppliers. The fusion of these solutions is set to provide reliable and eco-friendly transportation options to the people of Sarawak.

The development of hydrogen-fueled public transport in Sarawak reflects the region's unique potential, especially considering its abundant hydropower resources. Currently, approximately 3.5 gigawatts of hydropower facilities are in operation, positioning Sarawak well for green hydrogen production. The state has developed a dedicated hydrogen roadmap with a goal to manufacture 100,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2030, aiming to establish a robust hydrogen economy.

Recent initiatives include testing hydrogen fuel supply facilities and the proactive introduction of hydrogen-fueled public transport systems. The implementation of FC buses by Biaramas represents a significant step towards achieving a sustainable and decarbonized transportation system in the region.

The MOU signing aligns with Haikem's broader hydrogen business strategy, which recently included an agreement with Petchem of Sarawak in May 2025. This partnership aims to develop and construct a plant in Bintulu, leveraging Haikem's proprietary SEG® technology, which converts syngas into ethylene glycol. Haikem has successfully established a significant licensing business in China, with an annual output capacity of 10 million tons, accumulating considerable expertise and a robust network in hydrogen utilization both domestically and internationally.

Particularly noteworthy is Haikem’s collaboration with Carbon Energy, a Chinese climate tech company with strong expertise in hydrogen technologies. This year, the joint venture company, Haienergy, was established to undertake the manufacturing of green hydrogen production equipment and to develop shared technologies like the eDOC (a technique to recover CO2 from the atmosphere via seawater), bolstering Haikem's knowledge in hydrogen and CO2 utilization.

Haikem Corporation, operating within the realm of chemical trading and manufacturing, handles a wide array of products from life sciences—including pharmaceuticals, food, and agrochemicals—to cutting-edge electronics components. With four research facilities and catalyst mass production plants located in Japan and China, Haikem continues to focus on decarbonization technologies for chemical production, utilizing CO2 and developing bio-chemical technologies and battery systems.

The partnership with Biaramas, along with Haikem's existing capabilities, signifies a commitment to driving forward sustainable transportation solutions in Sarawak, marking a new chapter in the region's journey toward energy transition and innovation in public transit. As Haikem moves forward, they are poised to support Sarawak in becoming a leader in hydrogen utilization and eco-friendly transport solutions.
