As the 2026 hurricane season approaches, Duke Energy is stepping up to support communities across South Carolina by providing substantial funding through its HERO Grant Program. This initiative marks a significant investment of $500,000 aimed at enhancing emergency preparedness for local response teams, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle severe weather challenges.

Funding Breakdown

Duke Energy's recent grants are allocated to 34 organizations, each receiving up to $20,000. The funding is designed to enhance training programs, procure essential life-saving equipment, and acquire innovative technologies that have been identified as crucial following past severe weather events. As Tim Pearson, Duke Energy's president for South Carolina, articulated, “We strive to help fill the gaps in emergency preparedness our communities have.” These grants aim to support first responders and community leaders in effectively safeguarding and aiding residents during crises.

The HERO Grant Program, which began in 2022, has thus far distributed a total of $2.5 million across 133 grants, reflecting Duke Energy's commitment to community resilience and safety.

Impact of Previous Grants

The impact of previous HERO grants demonstrates the effectiveness of this funding initiative. In Dorchester County, for instance, the HERO funding facilitated the formation of a Cut & Toss Team, specifically created to manage debris clearance and restore emergency access during severe weather incidents. The team's rapid response proved invaluable when Winter Storm Fern hit, as they efficiently cleared vital roadways, thereby alleviating pressure on emergency services.

In Anderson County, the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in 2024 resulted in numerous hazardous road closures, overwhelming local emergency resources. Utilizing a $15,000 HERO grant, the county acquired a fully equipped traffic-control trailer, enabling them to mobilize quickly and manage multiple road sites efficiently during emergencies.

Oconee County utilized its HERO funding to establish a second shelter trailer, which allowed authorities to run two warming shelters concurrently, meeting the needs of residents, including those with special medical requirements.

Community Response

Community leaders have voiced their gratitude for the support from Duke Energy. Dr. Mandy Gattis, Grants and Special Projects Director of South Carolina EMS Association, remarked, “This grant will ensure that EMS agencies, hospitals, and emergency management teams have the reliable communication tools they need to coordinate and respond effectively during disasters.”

Katherine Jones, Parks Director of York County, highlighted how the grant will allow for significant upgrades to weather-related safety measures in parks that host over 300,000 annual visitors. Improved monitoring and quicker response times will undoubtedly enhance visitor safety across the county.

Robbie Swofford, Emergency Management Coordinator for Spartanburg County, noted that his department will leverage the funding to conduct community outreach for weather preparedness and life safety resources, thus directly benefiting local residents.

Moreover, Rob Lybrand, Sumter County Emergency Management Director, expressed that this funding would bolster roadway safety measures and accessibility during adverse weather conditions, reinforcing the county’s overall emergency response capabilities.

Duke Energy's philanthropic efforts, through the Duke Energy Foundation, allocate more than $30 million annually to support various community needs. The funds are essential for building a more prepared and resilient community capable of facing natural disasters.
