Celebrate Children's Day with Science and Cuisine
On May 5, 2026, to commemorate Children's Day, Farmind Co., Ltd. will host an engaging and educational cooking event titled "Color Changing and Solidifying?! Elementary School Science Cooking Class.” This event invites 80 elementary school students and their parents to explore the wonders of the Taiwanese pineapple, which has recently gained a market share of 9.5% in Japan. Participants will dive into hands-on cooking experiences that not only entertain but also educate about the importance of fruit consumption and combating household food waste.
The Importance of Fruits for Kids
Recent statistics highlight a troubling trend: children aged 7 to 14 consume an average of only 73.9 grams of fruit daily, far below the government-recommended intake of 200 grams. This has led to increased concern over what is described as "fruit aversion" among children. Simultaneously, Japan faces a severe challenge with approximately 2.36 million tons of food waste generated each year. This event seeks to address these pressing issues by using the Taiwanese pineapple as a conduit for education and engagement, encouraging kids to explore food in relatable and enjoyable ways.
Event Highlights
Supervised by Experts
This unique experience is designed under the guidance of a registered dietitian. Kids will don lab coats and transform into 'researchers' in a simulated kitchen lab. They will engage in experiments utilizing the entire Taiwanese pineapple, exploring its structure, observing pH reactions, and understanding how acids interact with proteins through creative and delicious cuisine.
Experiments
1.
Color Changing Magic Drink: This first experiment will illustrate the science behind pH reactions using ingredients to create a beverage that changes color. Children will learn about chemical reactions in a fun, interactive way.
2.
Milk Transformation Mystery: The second experiment will utilize the acidity of the pineapple to reveal the secrets of protein transformation, underlining the fascinating relationships between food and science.
3.
Whole Pineapple Observation: Participants will observe and create dishes using the entire pineapple, aiming to appreciate its taste while minimizing waste. This experiential learning emphasizes both culinary creativity and sustainability practices.
The dietitian supervising the event, Saori Hirono, is passionate about developing children's interest in fruits, integrating nutritious elements into their meals in fun and engaging ways. By combining science and culinary arts, she hopes to reshape children's perceptions of food, demonstrate its importance, and significantly enhance their interest in healthy eating.
Encouraging Future Generations
The event's overarching goal is to excite children about the idea of eating fruits and understand their significance to a balanced diet. By fostering curiosity through sensory experiences and imaginative cooking, this initiative aims to turn questions of "why?" into delightful discoveries of "aha!" moments.
