Celebrate the Itabashi Cultural Heritage Week 2025

The Itabashi Ward of Tokyo is excited to announce the Itabashi Cultural Heritage Week 2025, a special event that will run from October 4 to November 30, 2025. This initiative is aimed at providing residents with the opportunity to explore and appreciate the district's cultural heritage.

Every autumn, the municipality opens previously inaccessible cultural sites for a limited time, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the region's history. This year's focus will be on the temples surrounding Itabashi-juku, a popular day trip destination during the Edo period, known for attracting many worshippers.

Highlights of the Event

During this unique event, participants can enjoy a rotating exhibition of cultural heritage from the Edo era, showcasing artifacts and locales that Edo-period citizens once admired. Among the many treasures, the Nichiyō-ji Temple stands out. It is home to a hanging scroll written by the statesman Matsudaira Sadanobu, who is also featured in popular historical television dramas. Furthermore, the stunning Aizen Mandara, measuring 3 meters in height and 2 meters in width, will be publicly displayed for the first time. This magnificent artwork, rich in red and gold colors, was historically donated by the Tayasu clan, a prominent family within the Tokugawa shogunate.

On the opening day at Nichiyō-ji Temple, guests will receive a special coloring sheet depicting Aizen Myōō, adding an engaging element for visitors, especially children, to connect with the exhibit.

In addition to the main attractions, special openings will occur in various locations across Itabashi:

• - Shōgetsu-in Temple in the Akatsuka area will showcase documents from the Tokugawa shogunate.
• - Moro Ruins in Kamitakashi will exhibit significant Paleolithic artifacts, marking the location as a critical archaeological site within the region.

To enhance the experience, local historians and curators will be available on-site, providing insightful guided tours. Their expertise will help illuminate the historical importance and features of each location, making the entire event accessible and enjoyable for all attendees.

Visitors to both Nichiyō-ji and Chikusei-ji Temples should note that complimentary items will be distributed, which will be available until supplies last.
