Okayama University's Forum on Educational Goals Reaches New Heights in Open Discussions

On June 12, 2026, Okayama University, under the leadership of President Yasuyuki Nasu, hosted a notable forum aimed at achieving educational objectives specified in their mid-term plan. This event marked a significant shift from past evaluations, as it focused on open discussions between faculty and external evaluators, prepping for the next six-year plan starting in 2028.

The first open discussion was moderated by Vice President Akira Okada, focusing on the admissions process for the 2040 academic year. Participants exchanged diverse opinions on how to secure desirable students in a diminishing youth population, spurred by expected demographic shifts and changes in societal values. Ideas were proposed to transition from a traditional selection model to a more inclusive recruitment strategy, emphasizing the importance of addressing regional disparities.

Following this, the second open discussion led by Hiroki Tabuchi, Head of the Academic Affairs Department, concentrated on the future of graduate education amidst national trends. Discussions highlighted the targeting of vital areas within graduate programs, particularly doctoral courses, and included potential curricular reforms aimed at standardizing graduate education completion to better prepare students for the evolving job market. Suggestions came forth from members such as Makoto Suga, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who stressed the need for universities, recognized under the new J-PEAKS initiative, to align their educational offerings with industry expectations.

The forum featured insights from external evaluators like Tetsuo Taniguchi, Honorary Professor at Kyushu University, and Shinji Tateishi, an Assistant Professor at Tsukuba University, who shared experiences and initiatives from their respective institutions about enhancing graduate curricula and career development mechanisms. This collaborative environment fostered fruitful exchanges, quickly extending the originally scheduled two-hour session.

As the discussions concluded, Vice President Suga expressed gratitude to all participants, acknowledging the diverse perspectives shared throughout the forum. Okayama University intends to utilize the various insights garnered during this event to advance internal discussions as they look toward their next six-year target period.

The university is dedicated to being a key player in regional development, emphasizing unique research initiatives while simultaneously focusing on sustainable community contributions.
