Harry Zhu Set to Lead WSECU as New President and CEO in 2026

Transition of Leadership at WSECU

WSECU, a prominent credit union based in Olympia, Washington, has officially announced that Harry Zhu will step into the role of President and CEO starting September 21, 2026. Zhu will be taking over from Gary Swindler, who has dedicated 37 years to the organization and will be retiring next month.

The board of directors conducted a nationwide search to find Zhu, reflecting their commitment to finding a leader who can effectively guide the cooperative into the future. Vikki Smith, chair of WSECU's board, expressed the board's enthusiasm for Zhu's appointment, citing his extensive executive experience and his focus on member-centric leadership. "We are excited for Harry to build on our past success and elevate WSECU to the next level of member service and organizational growth," she stated.

Harry Zhu’s Background

Before joining WSECU, Zhu served as the CEO at USAlliance Federal Credit Union in Rye, NY, an institution noted for its innovative approach and recognition as a top employer. His impressive resume also includes a significant tenure at Alliant Credit Union, where he held various senior executive positions. Zhu played a key role in transforming Alliant's operations and expanding its assets from $7 billion to $18 billion.

His track record includes enhancing the member experience and doubling the credit union's membership, positions that uniquely prepare him for this new challenge. Zhu holds master's degrees in both business administration and engineering from the University of Michigan, blending technical expertise with leadership acumen.

Emphasizing Community and Innovation

Zhu expressed his excitement about joining WSECU, highlighting the credit union's dedication to serving its members. "What drew me to this opportunity was the credit union's uncompromising focus on members' needs, its appetite for innovation, and its reputation as a community partner," he said. He aims to strengthen financial performance, enhance member value, and foster engaged teams as WSECU anticipates its 70th anniversary in 2027.

His approach will also be shaped by Swindler’s legacy, as the two leaders will work together to ensure a seamless transition. Smith lauded Swindler's impact on WSECU throughout his career, noting advancements made in digital services and the expansion of branch networks during his tenure.

Looking Ahead

WSECU was founded in 1957 and has grown into a significant financial entity with over 315,000 members and $5.1 billion in assets. It has consistently been recognized among Forbes' Best-In-State Credit Unions in Washington for six consecutive years. As the organization prepares for this leadership transition, there is a strong focus on continuing its mission to serve the community and to support local initiatives through a commitment of 4 percent of its annual net income.
