The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) recently hosted the 2025 ITRI Net Zero Day on April 8 in Taiwan's bustling capital, Taipei. This significant event brought together industry leaders, government officials, and energy experts, focusing on the vital theme of energy efficiency. ITRI President Edwin Liu opened the event by underscoring the critical role of energy efficiency in the clean energy transition. Liu labeled energy efficiency as the "first fuel," asserting that it is essential for minimizing energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions, and ultimately lowering costs for industries worldwide. He expressed ITRI's commitment to developing tools and solutions that empower sectors to adopt more energy-efficient practices, advance renewable energy usage, and encourage low-carbon technologies.

The event featured five distinct sessions covering various topics crucial for achieving a low-carbon future. Discussions included the implications of digital technology in achieving deep energy savings, innovative energy efficiency solutions, the significance of energy-saving behaviors, applications of hydrogen and ammonia, and insights into a circular economy. Participants actively engaged in exchanging valuable experiences and best practices to inspire actionable change.

Among the highlights of the event was the showcase of over 30 innovative net-zero technologies, including several groundbreaking projects:

Shalun Hydrogen Energy Technology


An impressive demonstration site for hydrogen energy technology, focusing on production, transportation, storage, and applications. This facility provides comprehensive solutions to enhance the hydrogen supply chain and expedite technological advancements, including anion exchange membrane electrolysis.

Adaptive Cold Energy Management System


Utilizing AI algorithms, this cutting-edge system recalibrates energy usage based on environmental conditions. It has already been implemented in over 3,200 retail stores, making significant strides in energy savings—recognized with a bronze at the 2025 Edison Awards for its innovative approach.

Low-Carbon Laser H-Beam Welding


Developed collaboratively by ITRI and Taiwan Mask Corporation, this technology has revolutionized steel structure production by achieving full penetration welds that save up to 80% in energy and reduce CO2 emissions. Using digital twins and intelligent tracking, this innovation increases production capacity fivefold while decreasing labor requirements and eliminating the need for post-treatment. It won a silver accolade at the 2025 Edison Awards.

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Regeneration


Employing biological agents and gravel separation techniques, this technology recycles reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) to recover high-quality gravel and asphalt, potentially converting 5 million tons of RAP into 3.5 million tons of recycled materials, significantly cutting carbon emissions by 270,000 tons annually.
