MIRDC Achieves Global Recognition with Multiple Edison Awards for Innovative Technologies

MIRDC Achieves Remarkable Success at Edison Awards

The Metal Industries Research and Development Centre (MIRDC) has once again put Taiwan on the global map for technological innovation by winning prestigious awards at the Edison Awards. This year, the center received a gold award, two silver awards, and a bronze award, underscoring its commitment to advancing technology and innovation.

The gold accolade went to the Precise 3D Magnetic Tracking-Guided ICH Surgical Navigation System, a groundbreaking innovation aimed at enhancing surgical procedures for intracranial hemorrhages. This revolutionary system functions much like a GPS, offering surgeons multidimensional visibility and precise navigation to bleeding sites. Typical challenges in such procedures often involve repeated punctures and significant radiation exposure; however, this system has reduced the need for multiple attempts and lowered intraoperative radiation exposure by an impressive 80%. Clinical studies indicate a significant decrease in surgical mortality rates from 25% to just 5% when utilizing this advanced system. Developed in partnership with ClearMind Biomedical and Dr. Cheng Yu-Wen of the Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, it promises safer and more effective interventions during critical medical emergencies such as strokes.

The first silver award recognized MIRDC's Compact and High-Performance Welding Cobot, which addresses complex welding challenges often encountered in large-scale metal production. This intelligent assistant utilizes innovative 3D laser coordinate mapping and AI-driven weld defect detection to ensure precision in multi-layered connections, crucial in environments with limited space. This cobot has evidenced a remarkable 90% productivity increase while simultaneously cutting setup and operational costs by 60%. With applications already underway at major projects like the Terminal 3 of Taoyuan International Airport, it showcases how intelligent manufacturing solutions can transform industries like aerospace and shipbuilding through significant collaborations with companies such as CSBC Corporation and Jong Shyn Shipbuilding.

Another silver award was presented for the Smart System of EDM Equipment for Aerospace Applications, which employs AI optimization to streamline the electrical discharge machining process. Eliminating the need for manual adjustments, this system adapts in real-time to parameters ensuring production time for fine machining is cut by over 50%, reaching tolerances as tight as 0.5 micrometers—an essential factor for meeting aerospace manufacturing standards. Integrated with AIoT-cloud management, it allows for nationwide remote monitoring and enhances traceability, which is invaluable for ensuring production stability in global supply chains. Notable firms like OSCARMAX and YIHAWJET have employed this technology to manufacture high-quality connectors for electric vehicles and aerospace components.

The bronze award was given to the Featureless-Secure Encryption System for IoT, which delivers cutting-edge cybersecurity through a multi-chaos system that generates high-entropy random keys. Its unique synchronization algorithm guarantees secure, non-retraceable encryption/decryption, even in unstable network conditions, and reduces computational resource use by 60%. This system is being licensed to software companies and system integrators, providing robust cybersecurity solutions for applications in IoT, blockchain, and smart transportation.

Yung-Hsiang Lai, President of MIRDC, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “These awards validate our technical capabilities and reflect our sustained efforts to develop intelligent, efficient, and secure solutions for the global market.” Over the past eight years, MIRDC has accumulated a total of 15 Edison Awards, solidifying its role as a vital link between Taiwan's innovative ecosystem and the international industrial community. Such achievements not only highlight their commitment to advancing technology but also reinforce Taiwan's reputation as a hub for cutting-edge innovations in the metal industry.
