Transforming Women's Health: A Landmark Gift for the Tamer Institute at UHealth

A Vision for Women's Health: Establishment of the Tamer Institute

The University of Miami Health System, known as UHealth, recently announced a monumental philanthropic donation made by Tony and Sandra Tamer aimed at revolutionizing women's healthcare in South Florida. This transformative gift introduces the Tamer Institute for Women's Health, which stands as a promise to enhance women's health outcomes through innovative care, research, and education. The establishment of this institute illustrates a pledge to genuinely address the healthcare needs of women across various life stages, recognizing that healthcare should be specifically tailored to the unique requirements of women rather than retrofitted to accommodate them.

The Tamer Institute will merge clinical excellence with research innovation to provide seamless and comprehensive care spanning from preventive measures to complex specialty treatments. Grounded in a holistic approach, the institute aims to create a family-friendly environment where multidisciplinary teams work together under one roof, assuring personalized experiences for women at different stages of their lives, whether it be adolescence, pregnancy, or menopause.

A Strategic Response to Women's Health Challenges

Sandra Tamer, one of the benefactors, expressed, "Women deserve care that is designed for them, not adapted to them." This sentiment guided the Tamers in their philanthropic journey, emphasizing the critical need for dedicated facilities that address the unique health challenges faced by women. Their goal is to construct a top-tier institute in South Florida that embodies a holistic model of care characterized by flexible scheduling that fits around the busy lives of women and families.

Tony Tamer stated, “This gift strengthens UHealth’s ability to redefine care, accelerate research, and expand education across conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women.” This reflects a commitment to tackle issues of accessibility and outcomes in women's health, especially significant given the findings from a McKinsey Health Institute report indicating women spend approximately 25% more time in poor health compared to their male counterparts.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps

Research shows that nearly 50% of women in the U.S. bypass preventive care services like regular screenings, highlighting a historical neglect of women’s healthcare. Additionally, a staggering 60% of women between the ages of 50 and 64 live with chronic health conditions that necessitate ongoing monitoring. The establishment of the Tamer Institute is poised to fill this pressing gap by creating a first-in-class facility that caters specifically to women's multifaceted health needs.

Michael J. Paidas, M.D., professor and chair at the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the Miller School, reiterates this vision: “With the Tamer Institute, we are building a holistic, patient-centered model... This investment directly addresses the preventive care gap and strengthens chronic condition management.”

At the Tamer Institute, a seamless navigation experience from adolescence to post-menopause will be emphasized, managing the complexities of women's health and reproductive challenges through an integrated care model.

Generosity in Action

Along with the establishment of the institute, the Tamers’ generous gift includes funds for multiple initiatives: clinical programs, research, educational pursuits, and endowed positions to attract top talent to the program. Notably, part of the contribution will also facilitate renovations of clinical and office spaces, providing state-of-the-art environments for both patients and healthcare professionals at its designated location in the Civica Building, located at 1050 N.W. 14th Street in Miami.

Dr. Paidas expressed profound gratitude for the Tamers’ transformative commitment, stating, “The Tamer Institute for Women’s Health will be the first of its kind in the country to provide a truly integrated multidisciplinary approach.” With an emphasis on patient-centered care and the quest for innovative medical solutions, the Tamer Institute signals a momentous shift in the integration of women's health services, ensuring that future generations receive optimal care tailored to their unique health journeys.
