Gong cha to Open Its First U.S. Airport Location at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

In an exciting development for bubble tea fans and travelers alike, Gong cha, the globally recognized bubble tea brand, is making its way into the airport sector. The brand plans to open its first airport location at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by the end of 2026. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in Gong cha's expansion strategy, focusing on high-traffic and non-traditional environments.

A New Venture in Travel Hubs

With nearly 2,200 locations across 33 countries, Gong cha is renowned for its customizable beverage experience. This new location will be operated in collaboration with Kind Hospitality, led by President and CEO Nava Singam. The partnership showcases Gong cha’s commitment to aligning with experienced operators skilled in navigating the unique challenges of busy airport environments.

Michael Nedelkovich, the Vice President of U.S. Non-Traditional Franchise Development, expressed enthusiasm, stating, "Airports are a natural evolution for Gong cha as we continue expanding into high-traffic, non-traditional environments. Our model was designed with operational efficiency, flexibility, and speed in mind." This new store is expected to cater to the growing demand for premium beverages in settings where travelers prioritize convenience and quality without lengthy wait times.

Innovative Airport Format

Gong cha's airport outlet will be built on its new Gong cha 2.0 operating platform, specifically designed to optimize throughput while minimizing operational complexity. This innovative model accommodates various store sizes, ranging from approximately 150 to 600 square feet, which can include kiosks and compact inline formats. Notably, its automation technology allows beverage preparation in under one minute with just one or two employees, helping to streamline service during peak travel times.

Unlike many traditional foodservice establishments, Gong cha's flexible operational model does not require extensive back-of-house infrastructure, enabling efficient operations in compact airport settings. “Gong cha has evolved significantly over the past few years, not just as a brand but as an operational platform,” added Nedelkovich. The company has focused on maintaining product quality, speed, and consistency, essential attributes for today’s consumers.

Expanding Horizons

As part of its ongoing U.S. growth strategy, Gong cha is actively exploring partnerships with experienced operators and concessionaires for further development opportunities in airports and other non-traditional locations nationwide. Ranking first in the Tea category on Entrepreneur's Franchise 500® list for five consecutive years, Gong cha continues to grow its footprint, now boasting over 240 locations across 24 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Founded in Taiwan in 2006, the brand has garnered immense popularity for its premium bubble tea, customizability, and strong corporate support. Since its debut in the U.S., Gong cha has opened numerous locations and aims to exceed 500 stores in the Americas by 2028. The brand’s remarkable achievements in recent years include a top spot in various industry rankings and awards, solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing bubble tea brands globally.
