Experience Fermentation Together: Family Workshops at Hankyu Umeda Main Store
Starting July 27 and running until August 4, 2026, Umekoji Fermentation Co. is set to make its debut at the Hankyu Umeda Main Store's Tree Terrace in Osaka. This exciting event coincides with the store's children's summer program, the "Kids College," aimed at providing a fun and educational experience for families.
Hands-On Fermentation Workshops
Focusing on the theme of "Wisdom of Fermentation x Parent-Child Experience," the workshops will create a chance for families to learn about fermentation culture through engaging activities. Participants can look forward to creating products that are deeply embedded in Japanese culinary traditions, such as plum syrup and salt koji. As families engage in crafting delicious fermented goods, they will also gain insights into how these items are made and the roles they play in enhancing everyday meals.
New Products and Collaborations on Display
In addition to the workshops, the Umekoji Fermentation Co. will feature its signature product, "KUROCO," alongside an array of new offerings including non-alcoholic black koji beer and a consomme koji product. A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of collaborative treats such as "Black Koji Monaka" developed in partnership with Naniwa Co., a traditional sweets manufacturer from Aichi Prefecture. The pop-up shop aims to familiarize families with the joys of fermentation through the slogan, "Experience, Learn, and Take Home."
A Taste of Tradition and Innovation
The workshops are designed to be family-friendly, making the often-complex world of fermentation accessible and enjoyable for children. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the process of making homemade preserved foods, learning vital skills and knowledge that can be applied at home. Not only will children engage with the ingredients, but they will also develop a profound appreciation for Japan's rich food culture.
During these hands-on sessions, families can participate in three different workshops:
1.
Plum Syrup Experience (2,600 yen/person)
- Create delicious plum syrup while learning about seasonal ingredients and preservation techniques.
2.
Salt Koji Experience (2,600 yen/person)
- Learn the workings of koji by making your own salt koji, a versatile ingredient that can be used in everyday cooking.
3.
