Karmanos Cancer Institute Teams Up with Detroit Library to Educate Community on Cancer Advances

Karmanos and Detroit Library Join Forces for Cancer Education

In a groundbreaking partnership, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) is collaborating with the Detroit Public Library to enhance community knowledge about cancer treatment options and ongoing research. Starting this May, the two organizations will present the 2025 Community Conversations on Cancer, a series designed to engage local residents with cancer experts and encourage dialogue about the latest advancements in the field.

The first session will take place on May 28 and will feature Dr. Boris Pasche, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, a leading oncologist and the president and CEO of Karmanos. He will present on "The Next Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment with Radiofrequencies". This session promises to shed light on how cutting-edge radiofrequency technology is transforming cancer treatment, emphasizing the exciting potential for improved patient outcomes.

Karmanos officials explain that many patients and their families often lack awareness of how the innovative treatments they receive are developed. Dr. Hayley Thompson, associate center director of Community Outreach and Engagement at Karmanos, expressed the importance of these sessions: "Our Community Conversations on Cancer program series brings the community together with Karmanos scientists to engage in bi-directional dialogue. At these community events, they will learn about what's new and coming down the pipeline regarding cancer treatments."

The focus of the May session will be the innovative TheraBionic P1 device, a new FDA-approved portable device for treating advanced liver cancer. "This new treatment offers additional hope, extended life, and minimal side effects to patients with incurable cancer," Dr. Pasche stated. This device uses radiofrequency electromagnetic fields to combat cancer, and early clinical trials have shown promising results.

This series will cover five additional topics throughout the year, leading up to November:
  • - June 25: Understanding Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
  • - July 23: Insights on Prostate Cancer
  • - September 17: Research on Uterine Cancer
  • - October 22: Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
  • - November 5: Effective Communication with Healthcare Providers

These events will be held at the Detroit Public Library Main Branch and are open to both in-person and virtual attendance, with registration required to ensure adequate resources and space.

The collaboration not only benefits patients, but also aligns with the Detroit Public Library's mission to provide high-quality information and programs for community growth. Mary Kordyban, a manager at the library, highlighted how the partnership allows health professionals to connect with the public in a comprehensible manner, creating an environment of shared knowledge.

Residents interested in participating can find more information and register online, helping to pave the way for a better-informed community regarding cancer care.

In addition to advancing treatment knowledge, Karmanos Cancer Institute remains a stalwart in cutting-edge cancer care in Michigan, and its partnership with the Detroit Public Library signifies a commitment to empowering the public with crucial health information. For over 75 years, Karmanos has been at the forefront of cancer research and treatment, known for its comprehensive approach and dedication to patient care.
