Huawei Showcases Six Global Energy Demonstration Projects Highlighting AI Synergy

Huawei's Six Global Energy Demonstration Projects

During the HUAWEI CONNECT 2026 conference held in Shanghai, Huawei hosted the Global Electric Power Summit, themed "AI × Energy: Unlocking a New Power System." This gathering brought together over 600 representatives from energy companies, industry organizations, ecosystem partners, and media professionals worldwide. The focus was on integrating the energy transition with digital and intelligent technologies.

At the summit, Huawei introduced six global demonstration projects that showcased real-world outcomes of comprehensive digital and intelligent transformation throughout the energy production and consumption processes. This marks a significant advancement for the energy sector—shifting from one-sided application of technologies to a synergistic integration of energy and computing capabilities.

The global energy system is currently undergoing profound changes, with distributed renewable energy becoming pivotal for reducing reliance on external sources. It enhances resilience within electricity grids and aims for universal energy access. Philippe Adam, Secretary General of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), stated that the energy sector is experiencing a massive transformation driven by energy transition, data centers for artificial intelligence (AIDC), and digitalization. Given the intertwined challenges related to the shift to renewable energy, intelligent transformation, and the lack of access to electricity for 700 million people, AI is becoming an indispensable tool for the energy system, which has a history spanning over a century.

Huawei believes that the low-voltage level, often a bottleneck in power grids, will become a key area for the application of AI in the future. Addressing gaps in low-voltage network management requires systematic and transparent governance. The foundation consists of six key capabilities: observability, measurability, controllability, adjustability, reversibility, and traceability; these are critical for ensuring long-term sustainability.

David Sun, CEO of Huawei's Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit, emphasized that the essence of low-voltage network transparency lies in more efficient and higher quality data yielding greater economic benefits. To unlock the potential of a new power system, the industry must focus on three primary priorities: digital competencies, digital infrastructure, and a regulated digital asset base (RAB).

The six global demonstration projects officially confirmed the success of digital and intelligent transformation. These projects include:
1. A digital and intelligent power grid from Brazil's CEMIG.
2. A demonstration zone for a new power system based on the interaction between distribution networks and microgrids at the Baiyun Electric Power Bureau, located in Guangzhou, China.
3. Intelligent diagnostics and operation of new distribution electric networks in Shaoshan, Hunan, China.
4. Smart power supply and energy consumption project in Jiangxi, China.
5. Digital converter station with ultra-high voltage ±800 kV in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China.
6. Communication network for the energy system in Liaoning, China.

Collectively, these projects demonstrate successful practical solutions for diverse scenarios encompassing the entire technological cycle of the power sector in this intelligent era. Moving forward, Huawei aims to leverage its strengths in information and communication technologies (ICT). Utilizing its three-tiered concept that encompasses metrics, architectures, and technologies, the company intends to collaborate with global energy enterprises, standardization organizations, and ecosystem partners to promote innovations, facilitate industry modernization, and foster the overall prosperity of the ecosystem.
