The Unique Fusion of Sukajan and Kimono
In a remarkable blend of tradition and modernity, the renowned kimono store YAMATO has launched an experimental project known as YAMATO Lab., partnering with TAILOR TOYO, a company celebrated for crafting Sukajan jackets for over half a century. The collaboration has given birth to the "SUKAJAN KIMONO," an innovative product that encapsulates the essence of both Japanese cultural heritage and contemporary fashion.
Launch and Release Event
Set to begin on April 1, 2025, the pre-orders for the Sukajan Kimono will open, marking a significant moment for both brands. To commemorate this launch, YAMATO Lab. will host the "SUKAJAN to KIMONO" release event at their gallery and shop in Kagurazaka, Tokyo, from April 19 to April 27, 2025. This nine-day event will offer visitors an exclusive opportunity to explore and experience the Sukajan Kimono firsthand.
The Evolution of Sukajan
Originally born out of the post-war chaos in Japan, Sukajan jackets emerged as a unique form of expression for American soldiers stationed in the country. These jackets, featuring exotic embroidery depicting motifs such as eagles, tigers, and dragons, became a symbol of Japan's rich culture and artistry. The collaboration between YAMATO Lab. and TAILOR TOYO is an acknowledgment of this heritage, aiming to elevate the Sukajan into the realm of traditional clothing by merging its elements with the classic kimono, thereby creating a new cultural intersection.
Event Highlights
During the upcoming event, attendees will have the chance to see and try on the Sukajan Kimono for the very first time. In addition to this collaboration item, YAMATO Lab. will offer seven limited-edition original pieces inspired by the Sukajan, featuring vintage kimonos beautifully embroidered to reflect the spirit of their origins. Furthermore, TAILOR TOYO will showcase a special exhibition that highlights the history and craftsmanship of Sukajan, providing visitors with insight into this fascinating garment.
Sustainability in Fashion
YAMATO Lab. is committed to sustainability, and during the event, they will also present a project called "Yado Tsunagi," which focuses on redefining and recycling old yukata from inns and resorts into new forms. This project aligns with their mission to honor traditional practices while innovating within the fashion landscape.
A Collaboration for the Ages
Both YAMATO Lab. and TAILOR TOYO possess deep-rooted histories and expertise in their respective crafts. With YAMATO's 108 years of service in the kimono industry and TAILOR TOYO's dedication to the Sukajan, this collaboration represents a unique fusion of styles and philosophies. As the two brands come together, they strive to create a product that is not merely a trend but a celebration of Japanese culture.
The Sukajan Kimono, priced at ¥90,200 (tax included), embodies features such as reverse wearability and intricate embroidery that respects its predecessors while incorporating elements from traditional kimono such as sleeves and collars.
As the event approaches, anticipation builds for this captivating blend of fashion and tradition, promising a remarkable experience for anyone interested in the evolution of Japanese apparel.
