Mitsubishi UFJ Technology Development Foundation Opens Grants for SMEs and Startups Starting April 20

The Mitsubishi UFJ Technology Development Foundation, located in Minato, Tokyo, has announced the acceptance of applications for its first round of research and development grants, which will open on April 20 and close on May 20. The foundation aims to support technology-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups that are facing challenges in securing funding for product development.

In recent times, there has been a growing emphasis on deep tech to enhance Japan’s competitiveness; however, many startups are struggling with funding shortages during the critical phase of product commercialization. To address this issue, the foundation will offer up to 3 million yen as an advance payment per project to accelerate research and development efforts and support early-stage business launches.

Grant Overview

  • - Grant Amount: 300,000 yen maximum per project, payable in advance upon grant approval. Recipients may also apply for other grant programs simultaneously.
  • - Eligibility: The program is aimed at SMEs or sole proprietors that have been established for five years or less following their inception or entry into new businesses.
  • - Application Period: The first round of applications will run from April 20 to May 20, and the second round from September 20 to October 20.
  • - Use of Funds: The funds can be used for essential research expenses, design costs, equipment purchases, testing fees, and prototype production.

Applications for the grants must include a detailed research and development grant application form, along with a clear plan for developing innovative technologies or products. Eligible projects should demonstrate novelty compared to current technologies and show a feasible path to commercialization within two years.

Selection Process

The selection process will be conducted through rigorous and fair assessments by a committee of experts and scholars. The foundation encourages potential applicants to refer to previous grant recipients and the Q&A section available on their website to better understand the application process and expectations.
