Legends Charity Game in Lisbon
This September, Lisbon will host a star-studded event that will see international football legends come together to play in the Legends Charity Game. This exciting match is organized by Sport Global Group and aims to raise millions of euros for communities grappling with the repercussions of war and social tensions around the globe.
Set for September 15, 2025, this charity match is touted as one of the biggest philanthropic events in Europe, especially in light of Portugal's upcoming co-hosting of the World Cup in 2030. The collaboration with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) ensures that the game will attract ample attention from fans and media alike, with over 50,000 spectators expected in the stadium and countless millions tuning in via online platforms and television broadcasts.
The Portuguese team of legends will be captained by none other than Luís Figo, a footballer renowned for his extensive achievements across Europe and a recipient of the Ballon d'Or in 2000. Figo expressed his pleasure at returning to his homeland, stating, "It's always a delight to come back and play football here, especially representing the national team! I look forward to seeing my hometown stadium filled with fans for this incredible Legends Charity Game and to raising funds for vital charitable causes."
Joining Figo will be an array of distinguished players including 2016 Euro Cup winners Ricardo Quaresma, Eliseu, and Ricardo Carvalho. Other notable participants include Champions League winners Fábio Coentrão, Maniche, and Deco, as well as legendary Portuguese players Beto, Jorge Andrade, and Simão. The team will be managed by Costinha, a fellow Champions League winner.
On the opposing side, the World Legends team promises a tough challenge, featuring iconic players like Peter Schmeichel from Denmark, Edwin van der Sar from the Netherlands, Cafu from Brazil, and Ronaldinho, to name a few. This diverse lineup highlights the global nature of the event and its intent to foster unity through sport.
Gaizka Mendieta, a former Valencia captain and now part of the World Legends team, mentioned, “This event is a great precursor to the World Cup 2030 and I hope to return each year. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for those less fortunate among us who need all the help we can provide at this time.”
The Legends Charity Game is part of a broader initiative known as 'Portugal Legends,' spearheaded by the FPF to honor and promote ties between former international players, the national team, and Portuguese football. The match will be held at either Estádio da Luz (the home of SL Benfica) or Estádio José Alvalade (the home of Sporting CP), anticipating an audience of 60,000 fans.
Funds raised from this extraordinary event are aimed at surpassing the €1,000,000 mark to support various charitable organizations both domestically and internationally. This includes beneficiaries like the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS), which offers essential humanitarian aid amid ongoing turmoil and conflict.
Maksym Dotsenko, the director general of URCS, underscored, “The war in Ukraine continues, and unfortunately, millions still require daily support. We have no right to pause. Initiatives like the Legends Charity Game not only aim to raise funds, but they also embody compassion and solidarity that transform into real help for those going through the toughest times.”
Additionally, Cáritas Portuguesa, which operates in Lisbon, is collaborating on this charity effort by providing crucial support to marginalized communities facing poverty and shortages of emergency aid.
Sport Global Group’s CEO, Rasmus Sojmark, stated, “This year, we are amplifying our charitable initiatives by organizing this spectacular football match to raise substantial funds for noble causes. By combining this match with the SBC Summit in Lisbon during the same week, we’ve found a way for communities connected to football and business to assist those facing unimaginable hardships.”
Tickets for the Legends Charity Game are available through the official website, www.legendscharitygame.com, with management handled by See Tickets. The Sport Global Charitable Foundation, which is supported by the Prism the Gift Fund (a registered charity in the UK), will ensure that all proceeds will go to the designated charities associated with the foundation, including the Ukrainian Red Cross and Cáritas Portugal.
