Asante and Weather Map Team Up for Real-Time Termite Tracking
Asante, Japan's leading termite control company, has recently joined forces with Weather Map Inc., a meteorological organization, to launch an innovative tool aimed at homeowners: the
Live Termite Swarm Map. This online platform allows users to visualize current termite activity, particularly that of the Yamato termite, during crucial swarming seasons, enhancing preventive measures against these pests. For years, the combination of pest control strategies and real-time weather data has been essential for efficient home maintenance and prevention.
Understanding the Termite Swarming Behavior
Yamato termites, known for causing substantial damage in homes, exhibit a unique behavior called “swarming,” where winged reproductive termites leave their colony to establish new nests. This phenomenon occurs annually, typically between April and June, starting from the warm regions of Kyushu and moving upwards as the temperature rises. The new map offers a dynamic and user-friendly way for individuals to understand when conditions are ripe for swarming.
By using
Google Maps, the Live Termite Swarm Map plots every service request and completed treatment site daily, showcasing real-time reports of winged termites in various locations across Japan. Importantly, these plots do not indicate specific residential addresses, but rather use postal codes to ensure user privacy.
What’s Included in the Live Termite Swarm Map?
The map provides an essential feature called
Swarm Alerts, which tracks current swarming conditions based on 16 years of accumulated weather data and service inquiries received by Asante. The alerts are generated by evaluating various factors such as temperature, precipitation, and the history of swarming events to deliver timely warnings. They are categorized into three levels:
- - Attention: High potential for swarming, requires caution.
- - Alert: Favorable weather conditions met, swarming likely.
- - Severe Alert: Optimal conditions present, swarming at peak.
Essential weather data utilized in these alerts comes from established meteorological structures, creating a reliable notification system for homeowners.
Key Weather Patterns for Termite Swarming
Asante and Weather Map have identified specific weather patterns that typically trigger termite swarming. For instance, a significant rain event followed by clear skies and a rise in temperature, like what occurred between April 29 and 30 in 2021, often leads to a large number of termites taking wing. The collaboration has further emphasized the link between weather conditions and termite swarming through their continuous research.
According to Jun Ebihara, a meteorologist at Weather Map, reviewing years of swarming data revealed consistent climate patterns despite geographical variations. His insights highlighted the potential for early detection of swarming events, encouraging homeowners to monitor weather forecasts closely during peak months.
