The Ilander High School Summit 2026 Announcement

Taisho University (President: Tomohiro Kamidachi), located in Toshima, Tokyo, will host the Ilander High School Summit 2026 in collaboration with the Japan Islands Center on January 24, 2027. This summit will take place online and is designed for high school students from remote islands across Japan.

The initiative aims to connect participants digitally to raise awareness of their unique island cultures, the potential they possess, and the value of bonding with peers from different islands. This event encourages mutual support and cooperation, nurturing an interest in local revitalization efforts. Previous summits have successfully sparked various exchanges and collaborative projects.

On July 30 at 16:30, an executive committee, consisting of five Taisho University students and eleven high school students from remote islands, will hold a press conference at the headquarters of Kyodo News in Minato, Tokyo. They will share insights about the summit, including its purpose and the enthusiasm driving this initiative. We welcome media representatives to attend this engaging event.

Launched in 2023 after a trial run in 2022, the summit coincides with the endeavors of Taisho University’s Area Concept Research Institute. The program is focused on developing strategic local leaders, distinguishing it as a unique educational experience.

This year’s motto is "Connecting Islands, Expanding Perspectives, Shining Future". The idea resonates deeply with the imagery of a lighthouse that ensures safe navigation across the waters between islands, symbolizing the unique lifestyle, culture, and education tailored to each island. It reflects a shared experience among high school students engaged in learning and overcoming challenges. The summit promotes new connections and diverse experiences through personal interactions, fostering collaboration and innovation.

The motto encourages individuals to value relationships between islands and among people, urging participants to embrace various perspectives and take the knowledge they gain back to contribute meaningfully to their communities. It aspires to cultivate a brighter future enriched by these experiences.

During the summit, remote island students will engage in group work and presentations under the mentorship of faculty members and university students from Taisho University. They will share their thoughts, showcase the beauty of their islands, and identify challenges, ultimately planning projects aimed at addressing local issues and creating new value harnessing community resources. This collaborative atmosphere is expected to nurture further exchanges, innovation, and teamwork among the participants.

On the other hand, the Area Concept Research Institute at Taisho University focuses on various community-engaged activities, fostering academic partnerships with numerous local governments. Together, they have created the unique Regional Strategy Talent program which nurtures new-age community leaders capable of addressing multifaceted challenges.
