Toyokumo's Ongoing Support for OSS Developers
Toyokumo Inc., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has recently announced the recipients of its
Thanks OSS Award for the first half of 2026, a program designed to support open-source software (OSS) developers. This initiative has reached a cumulative support total of approximately
$282,317 (around 45 million yen) since its launch in 2022. In this latest round, Toyokumo has decided to provide financial assistance of
$31,090 to
11 OSS developers and one organization, including seven new nominees.
The Need for OSS Support
In today's digital landscape, many essential software solutions, especially those in the
SaaS sector, rely heavily on OSS. However, the development and maintenance of these software solutions are often dependent on volunteer contributors. This reliance can lead to several challenges, including a shortage of resources and difficulties in managing software maintenance. Toyokumo aims to alleviate some of these pressures by offering ongoing financial support to OSS developers, allocated at roughly
10 million yen annually.
Details of the Support Program
The
Thanks OSS Award operates on a straightforward principle: to ensure that OSS developers can continue their vital contributions to the ecosystem. The support is calibrated to be equivalent to the annual salary of one software engineer, allowing recipients to focus on their projects without financial strain.
The specifics of the first half of 2026 support are as follows:
- - Support Period: January to June 2026
- - Total Support Amount: $31,090
- - Total Number of Supported Recipients: 11 individuals and 1 organization, including 7 new recipients
- - Support Distribution Method: Through GitHub Sponsors for streamlined assistance
- - Cumulative Support Amount: $282,317 since the program's inception

Statement from Toyokumo's CEO
Yuji Yamamoto, CEO of Toyokumo Inc., expressed, "The cloud services we provide are built upon the hard work of OSS developers worldwide. The majority continue to develop these tools voluntarily, highlighting a challenge that SaaS companies like ours must address directly. Even in this age of AI-driven code generation, the responsibility for designing software and ensuring its long-term operation lies with human engineers. The financial support for such OSS contributors is not only a way of expressing our gratitude but also a crucial responsibility for us."
