Expansion of Sectra's Digital Pathology Solution Enhances Cancer Diagnostics in Sweden

Sectra's Digital Pathology Solution Revolutionizes Cancer Diagnostics in Sweden

In a significant advancement for cancer diagnostics, Sectra, a renowned international medical imaging IT and cybersecurity firm, has expanded its digital pathology solution usage in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden's second-largest healthcare region. With this expansion, the collaboration spanning over two decades between Sectra and this healthcare provider is geared towards enhancing patient care through improved efficiency and diagnostic accuracy.

Unlike conventional methods that rely on physical glass slides and microscopes, Sectra's digital pathology solution offers healthcare facilities the ability to manage the entire diagnostic imaging process within a single application. This transformation is particularly crucial as the region manages a diverse patient population of approximately 1.7 million through 17 hospitals, including pathology laboratories located in Gothenburg, Borås, and Trollhättan.

Jan Siarov, a Consultant Pathologist and Department Manager at Region Västra Götaland, emphasized the need for solutions that streamline pathologists' daily tasks while fostering ongoing development to meet future demands. His confidence in Sectra's solution stems from its feature set that eliminates the inefficiencies of juggling multiple applications, ensures immediate availability of digital images, and facilitates necessary collaborative processes for obtaining second opinions. These improvements are expected to significantly benefit both treating physicians and patients, ultimately leading to better treatment outcomes.

Olof Andersson, Sales Director of Sectra in Scandinavia, highlighted how utilizing a unified application across the diagnostic workflow—from case identification to reporting—catalyzes workflow efficiency. This is particularly important for healthcare regions like Västra Götaland, which aspire to transition entirely to digital reviews of patient cases. Such a shift is vital not only for maintaining high standards in patient care but also for managing the increasing volumes of diagnostic imaging service demands in an efficient manner.

The digital pathology contract was formalized in January 2025, further extending Region Västra Götaland's established use of Sectra's solutions that encompass various medical imaging sectors such as radiology, mammography, and clinical physiology. This ongoing partnership marks Sectra's commitment to delivering cutting-edge innovations that create seamless, integrated workflows in the healthcare space.

Sectra's digital pathology capabilities are an integral component of its enterprise imaging solutions designed to fulfill broader imaging needs while simultaneously reducing operational costs. This modular solution, featuring a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) at its core, allows healthcare providers the flexibility to expand their imaging capabilities without the necessity of investing in new backend systems for every imaging discipline they wish to adopt.

Since its inception in 1978, Sectra has focused on crafting solutions that promote a healthier, safer society, aiding health systems globally in enhancing care efficiency and protecting sensitive information for authorities and defense forces across Europe. With a robust fiscal performance in the 2023/2024 year totaling SEK 2,964 million, Sectra is positioned as a leader in the medical imaging sector and continues to expand its reach, backed by its recognition in
