The 2025 Understanding China Conference is set to unfold in Guangzhou from November 30, 2025. This prominent event is expected to gather an array of global figures including state leaders, scholars, industry experts, and representatives from international organizations. The core focus this year is themed 'New Plan, New Development, New Choices’, aiming to explore Chinese modernization and its vision for future global governance.
Co-organized by the China Institute for Innovation Development Strategy (CIIDS), the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the conference promises a robust program spanning three days. The agenda features an opening ceremony, keynote speeches, guest dialogues, and numerous thematic forums which foster interaction among participants. Overall, the event is structured to invite transparent discussions, as all sessions, except for a few closed-door seminars, will be open for media coverage.
With around 200 international representatives confirmed from 72 countries and regions, including notable participants from Hong Kong and Macao, approximately 70% of the attendees hail from Global South nations, with many attending for the first time. This diverse grouping includes seven former vice-premiers, eleven ranked ministers, and various ambassadors from international organizations in China. In total, this year's participation is expected to reach around 800 individuals, highlighting the conference's role as a beacon for voices from the Global South, sharing the lessons learned from China's modernization journey and its role in creating a shared future for humanity.
The thematic outline of this year's conference highlights four pivotal areas:
1. Promoting the 15th Five-Year Plan while reflecting on the previous plan's outcomes;
2. Analyzing the global implications of China’s modernization effort;
3. Disseminating insights into China’s four major global initiatives, along with their contributions to international development;
4. Highlighting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a frontier of reform and opening-up efforts.
Additionally, attendees will engage in supporting activities under the umbrella of 'Understanding Guangzhou,' which will showcase the 'Guangzhou A City that Beautifies the World' exhibition alongside immersive urban experiences along the Pearl River. These activities aim to illustrate the vibrant practices of Chinese modernization in real-life contexts.
Since its inception in 2013, the Understanding China Conference has matured into a premier forum dedicated to interpreting China's strategic insights and their resonance on the global stage.
