Celebrating 30 Years of Transformative Pediatric Care in Asia

Friends Without a Border: 30 Years of Impact

In June 1996, Japanese photographer Kenro Izu founded Friends Without a Border in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Witnessing the heartbreaking moment when a father was unable to save his daughter due to insufficient funds for medical care, Izu could not ignore the urgent need for quality pediatric healthcare in the region. This encounter moved him to take action, prompting the establishment of a non-profit organization focused on pediatric medicine.

With a fervent belief that "every child has the right to a healthy and happy life," it became a mission for the organization to ensure that all children, regardless of their circumstances, have access to proper medical care. Thus, the first step in this transformative journey began.

The First Project: Angkor Hospital for Children

Friends' inaugural project launched in 1999 with the establishment of the Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap. Supported by a global network of supporters and stakeholders, the hospital opened its doors in a time when there were few resources available. The guiding principle was clear: "Treat every patient as if they were our own child."

For 30 years, the organization has witnessed remarkable growth and development alongside its Cambodian staff. In 2013, a landmark achievement occurred when the hospital became fully run by local Cambodian staff, emphasizing its dedication to sustainability and local empowerment. The hospital was reshaped into a place defined by mission, collaboration, and community involvement.

Expansion into Laos: Louangphabang Friends Hospital

In 2013, the organization extended its vision to Laos, inaugurating the Louangphabang Friends Hospital (LFHC) in 2015. Just like AHC, LFHC operates around the pillars of "medical care, education, and prevention," providing emergency services to children aged newborn to 15 years old. With an average annual patient volume of over 40,000, it has continued to impact the lives of countless children and their families.

The LFHC, now entering its 11th year, has developed into a center that not only treats illnesses but also chooses to focus on the underlying social determinants of health, including family circumstances and cultural backgrounds. This commitment to holistic care sets Friends apart and strives to deliver comprehensive pediatric care that resonates deeply with the communities served.

The Philosophy Behind the Care

The goal of Friends is not merely to create hospitals but to create environments where love, understanding, and healthcare converge. This vision underwrites all actions and approaches within its facilities—medical professionals and community members are empowered to genuinely connect with patients, fostering a sense of trust, care, and community.

In recognizing that every child deserves love and access to health, the organization remains steadfast in its belief that every child must receive appropriate care regardless of their circumstances. Izu's vision has transcended far beyond his original dream—it's now a collective endeavor involving thousands of supporters from around the world.

Looking Forward: Celebrating 30 Years

As we approach the 30th anniversary, Friends Without a Border is launching various events to commemorate this incredible journey. Detailed announcements about events will be available on the official website, and everyone is encouraged to participate. Those interested can invite others to join, helping to expand the network of support further. Together, we can embody the spirit of unity and healing, creating a future where no child is left behind in their healthcare journey.
