In a notable advancement for the pharmaceutical industry, Evonik has announced plans for a new GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) facility focused on lipid-based drug delivery systems in Vancouver, Canada. This strategic investment exceeds 150 million CAD (approximately 93 million EUR) and has received further support of up to 68 million CAD (around 42 million EUR) from the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund. The project was officially announced on August 27, 2026, by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry, alongside Evonik’s Health Care business line head, Guido Skudlarek, at the University of British Columbia.

Lipid-based drug delivery technologies are at the forefront of developing next-generation pharmaceuticals, including vaccines and therapies. The new Vancouver facility aims to enhance Evonik's capabilities in developing and manufacturing these crucial drug products, catering to the increased demand seen in recent years, especially for lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).

Expansion Plans and Enhanced Capacity

The establishment of the new GMP facility will not only increase Evonik's manufacturing capacity by more than threefold but also significantly improve quality control and microbiological testing efficiencies. This expansion is crucial for ensuring that products can be released in a timely manner for clinical use, helping pharmaceutical and biotech clients expedite their go-to-market timelines.

"The Vancouver region is a vibrant hub for life sciences innovation, and we are proud to expand our footprint in this ecosystem," said Skudlarek. This investment is a testament to the growing biopharma sector in British Columbia, which now boasts over 2,000 companies employing nearly 20,000 individuals.

The global demand for LNPs has surged dramatically, especially highlighted by their pivotal role in COVID-19 vaccinations. Industry projections estimate the LNP market will reach a valuation of USD 2.7 billion by 2034. Given this context, the development of lipid-based therapeutics is becoming increasingly critical for pharmaceutical companies as they seek to innovate in mRNA and other nucleic acid-based drug categories.

Evonik has a long history in lipid-based drug delivery, having established a reputation since the 1990s, providing contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) services for advanced LNP and liposomal systems.
