Oikura's Milestone: 50% Population Coverage Rate Achieved
In a remarkable achievement for the recycling industry, MarketEnterprise Co., Ltd. has announced that its reuse platform, Oikura, has surpassed a 50% population coverage rate. As of August 26, 2026, this means that approximately 62.2 million residents across Japan are now able to access reuse options through Oikura, making it a practical choice for many.
Expanding Opportunities for Reuse
The company, headquartered in Chuo City, Tokyo, has successfully forged partnerships with various municipalities to promote awareness around reuse before residents dispose of unwanted items. This initiative is not only about reducing waste but also addresses local concerns through innovative programs. For instance, through collaborations with Sayama City, the platform has taken part in model projects led by the Ministry of the Environment, focusing on the collection and reuse of items from vacant houses, as well as reusing used GIGA School terminals in primary and junior high schools.
Currently, many municipalities face pressing challenges regarding the minimization of bulky waste disposal. The Ministry of the Environment has articulated this urgency in its roadmap for promoting reuse, which aims for 600 municipalities to collaborate with reuse businesses by 2030. The goal also includes increasing the reuse rate among residents to 50%, underscoring the critical importance of fostering a reuse culture within communities.
As a result of accelerated efforts in collaboration with various municipalities, Oikura has now become operational in 341 municipalities across 45 prefectures. This coverage includes 23 prefectural capitals, 15 designated cities, and 30 core cities, significantly broadening its reach.
With the recent agreement established with Koga City, the total population covered by Oikura has reached approximately 62.2 million, translating to a population coverage rate of around 50.02%. This milestone reflects that, effectively, one in every two residents in Japan now has access to the benefits of reuse through participating municipalities, encouraging a shift towards sustainability within everyday life.
Future Commitment to Sustainability
Moving forward, MarketEnterprise is dedicated to not only facilitating public reuse initiatives across local governments but also contributing to the achievement of the ministry's roadmap objectives. The company aims to expand its collaborations further, making the option of reuse a familiar and standard practice within communities. By doing so, they hope to play a pivotal role in the creation of a sustainable society.
Oikura stands out as a prominent platform for reuse, allowing individuals to receive evaluations for unwanted items and facilitating comparisons between local reuse shops. With approximately 1.68 million users by the end of February 2026, Oikura simplifies the selling process, encouraging people to choose reuse over disposal.
