Florence, Alabama: A New Member of the Cast Iron Pipe Century Club

The Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA) proudly announces that the City of Florence, Alabama, has joined the ranks of the prestigious Cast Iron Pipe Century Club. This club, founded in 1947, recognizes the significant longevity and reliability of cast iron pipes in service for over a century. Florence's water infrastructure is a testament to the visionary engineering and planning executed by city officials more than a hundred years ago.

DIPRA President David Cole emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, "The forward-thinking engineers and city planners who first installed cast iron pipes in Florence, AL, more than 100 years ago are to be commended for selecting the best pipe available." He noted that the modern Water Department's commitment to using Ductile iron pipes underlines a legacy of quality and long-term planning aimed at ensuring safe drinking water.

Florence’s journey with cast iron pipes began with the installation of a 6-inch water main between 1880 and 1890, according to records from the Water Department. Remarkably, a section of this original pipe, which remains in operation today, is commemorated as part of Florence’s induction into the Century Club. "This honor is not only a testament to the quality of materials that were once used but also to the current and past employees of our department," remarked Tad Cole, Water Department Manager. This legacy reflects the ongoing dedication to providing clean and safe drinking water to the community.

Such recognition is significant, considering that the Cast Iron Pipe Century Club now counts over 550 water utilities across the United States and 35 in Canada among its members. This achievement highlights not only the resilience of cast iron but also the continued relevance of Ductile iron as a modern solution for water delivery systems. In addition to the Century Club, DIPRA sponsors a Cast Iron Pipe Sesquicentennial Club, celebrating utilities with pipelines in service for over 150 years.

Founded in 1915, DIPRA serves as a beacon of resourceful guidance for the water industry, providing technical research, standards representation, and advisory services. Member companies are united in their commitment to producing and delivering high-quality Ductile iron pipe material. As the water industry grapples with evolving challenges, organizations like DIPRA play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and safety of water utilities across the globe. Florence's enrollment in the Century Club marks not just a historical recognition but also a bright future for sustainable water infrastructure that communities can trust for generations to come.
