In the Age of AI: Marketers Embrace Technology While Valuing Human Creativity and Oversight

Marketers Embrace AI in Their Work

In a groundbreaking study conducted by Alter Agents and Smartly, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into marketing practices has been revealed, showing a remarkable percentage of 99% of marketers in the U.S. and U.K. utilize AI in their work or personal lives. This data underscores a shift in the marketing landscape where the focus has shifted from whether or not to adopt AI, to understanding how to effectively leverage it to enhance capabilities and achieve impactful results.

The survey, which involved 500 marketing professionals, emphasizes that AI is seen not merely as a tool, but as a transformative force that expands the creative possibilities available to marketers. Among the respondents, an impressive 81% agreed that AI empowers them to execute much larger projects than they could manage independently. However, this new era also raises critical discussions about the preservation of brand identity and uniqueness. Julia Berk, Senior Director of Research at Smartly, noted that the real challenge moving forward is in merging human creativity with AI capabilities to foster positive business outcomes.

One of the major revelations of the study was the appreciation among marketers for AI's role in creativity. A significant 85% of participants expressed enthusiasm when brands deploy AI to materialize creative concepts. However, this excitement is tempered by concern; nearly two-thirds worry that reliance on AI might lead to a reduction in distinctiveness within creative output. This concern highlights the continued relevance of human oversight in advertising, as 77% of marketers feel more comfortable utilizing AI when a human reviews the final output. In fact, 81% indicated increased trust toward brands that disclose their AI-generated advertisements, showcasing a hunger for transparency in AI applications.

Interestingly, the research also differentiated experiences based on tenure in the industry. Marketers with less than a decade of experience were found to be utilizing AI significantly more than veterans, with those newer to the field likely to report AI as integral to at least 75% of their daily tasks. However, among seasoned professionals, there exists a notable association of AI with stress and job anxiety, with 46% expressing such feelings compared to just 26% of their less experienced counterparts. This finding raises questions about the comfort level and adaptability of different generations within the workforce.

Additionally, the necessity for up-skilling to bridge identified knowledge gaps is evident. An overwhelming 95% of respondents pinpointed that training in strategic thinking and uniquely human capabilities is critical for adapting to the AI-infused environment. Skills such as creative brainstorming, ethical considerations in AI utilization, and strategic planning emerged as essential areas for development as the marketing profession evolves.

The study also articulates five guiding principles for the advertising industry to thrive in this „agentic era“ of AI. These principles stress the need for a synergistic relationship between AI-enhanced processes and the irreplaceable attributes of human creativity and strategic oversight. The findings reinforce that as marketers shift to more AI-oriented practices, maintaining a foundation grounded in human values and creativity will define successful marketing strategies moving forward.

This comprehensive analysis marks an essential step in the ongoing dialogue regarding the role of AI in marketing, offering a necessary perspective on how technology can enhance human talent rather than replace it. Moving forward, the industry will host a free webinar titled "Inside B2B Marketing's AI Adoption Gap" on October 28, 2026, at 11 a.m. Pacific time where further insights from this research will be shared, giving professionals an opportunity to explore AI’s impact on marketing dynamics.

As companies like Smartly and Alter Agents continue to lead in research and innovation, the marketing landscape stands on the brink of change, where the fusion of AI technology with human ingenuity promises to drive better advertising and business outcomes. With careful stewardship, the marketer of tomorrow will leverage the best of both worlds, driving meaningful connections through digitally enabled creativity.
