Perforce Introduces Long-Term Support for Spring Framework and Boot to Optimize Java Environments

Perforce Software Enhances Enterprise Java Support with Spring LTS

Perforce Software, renowned for its innovative DevOps solutions, has recently launched Long-Term Support (LTS) for the Spring Boot and Spring Framework. This new offering arrives at a critical juncture for enterprise Java teams striving to maintain their applications' security and stability amidst an accelerated six-month release cycle. Often, this rapid pace forces organizations into a dilemma: upgrade frequently or risk running outdated, unsupported versions.

The shift to a time-based release model started with Spring Framework 6.0 and Spring Boot 3.0, aligning releases with the OpenJDK schedule. While this transition provides quicker access to new features and cloud-native improvements, it presents significant operational challenges for enterprises due to shorter support lifecycles—typically ranging from 12 to 18 months. Teams must continuously devote resources to testing, validation, and deployment of updates while ensuring compliance with existing standards.

Matthew Weier O'Phinney, Principal Product Manager at Perforce OpenLogic, highlighted the challenges these dev teams face: "DevOps teams are caught between the need to innovate and the operational reality of managing complex Java environments," he explained. With Spring LTS, organizations can avoid the pressure of rushing into upgrades, allowing for stable applications while strategically planning migrations and ensuring compliance requirements are met without unnecessary haste.

OpenLogic's Spring LTS will extend support for Spring Boot 2.7 and Spring Framework 5.3 until October 2027, with support for newer versions like Spring Boot 3.2 and Spring Framework 6.1 in the pipeline. Additionally, the offering includes guaranteed security patches for critical vulnerabilities within 14 days and high-severity issues within 30 days. Customers will also have access to flexible options such as premium support, which guarantees a one-hour response time, along with production deployment assistance.

Perforce's expansive Java solutions portfolio also features technical support for Spring, OpenJDK, and Tomcat. Organizations handling numerous microservices or operating in regulated industries can now synchronize their Spring upgrades with corporate priorities instead of relying solely on community support timelines. This alignment helps to mitigate the build-up of technical debt and enhances feature testing before new updates are fully integrated.

Jeff Michael, Senior Director of Product Management at Perforce Software, shared a recent success story: “One of our clients faced a decision between committing resources to upgrade their Spring infrastructure over two full quarters or risking their platform's security and compliance. By adopting Spring Long-Term Support, they escaped this predicament, saving an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 hours of unplanned work while upholding security coverage and meeting project timelines for vital features.”

Spring LTS is available immediately, providing a robust solution for enterprises looking to bolster their Java application frameworks without compromising their operational integrity.
