Trends in Restaurant Salaries for the First Half of 2025 Analyzed

Overview of Restaurant Salary Trends for 2025

In a recent report released by Synchro-Food, the operator of the specialized job portal "Restaurant.com," average salary data for the Japanese restaurant industry in the first half of 2025 has been presented. This analysis is based on salary listings from 61,976 job postings across four major regions: Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, and Fukuoka.

Salary Analysis

For the first half of 2025, the average salary in Tokyo reached ¥301,309, showing an increase of ¥3,874 from the previous period (a 101.3% rise). Osaka followed with an average salary of ¥288,499 (up by ¥2,836, or 101.0%), while Aichi's average was ¥275,643 (up by ¥1,726, or 100.6%). Fukuoka recorded a significant jump, with an average salary of ¥267,748, marking a rise of ¥4,338, equivalent to 101.6%.

The hourly wage trajectory also demonstrated a similar upward trend: Tokyo's average increased by ¥12 to ¥1,308 (101.0%), while Osaka saw a smaller increase of ¥7, resulting in an hourly rate of ¥1,219 (100.6%). Aichi and Fukuoka followed suit, with average hourly rates of ¥1,147 (up by ¥14, or 101.2%) and ¥1,085 (up by ¥10, or 101.0%), respectively.

Despite these gains, the rate of salary growth appeared to slow down compared to the previous year, partly due to the highest minimum wage revisions accompanying the latter half of 2024.

Sector-Specific Salary Trends

The report further delves into average salaries categorized by restaurant type, focusing predominantly on five main sectors: Italian, Japanese, izakaya (pubs/dining bars), cafes, and Western cuisine. All sectors reported a positive increase in average salaries in Tokyo. Notably, the cafe sector experienced the highest increase, with an average salary surge of ¥4,600, closely followed by izakaya with an increase of ¥4,578.

Interestingly, the data reveals a correlation between recruitment difficulty and salary levels: sectors with hiring challenges often offer higher salaries, whereas sectors with less recruitment difficulty tend to have lower wages. Both Japanese cuisine and izakaya positions have surpassed ¥300,000 in salary offers, indicative of the tough hiring landscape.

Job Role Salary Insights

An analysis of salaries by job role highlights that for both Tokyo and Osaka, cooking staff continue to command higher salaries than service roles, maintaining an upward growth trajectory of over 101%. This trend underlines the ongoing demand for skilled personnel in kitchen roles across the industry.
