Huawei Introduces Smart Substation Solutions at Enlit Africa 2026 to Transform Energy Sector

Huawei's Bold Step Towards Intelligent Energy Solutions

On May 20, 2026, Huawei made waves at the Southern Africa Electric Power Summit during Enlit Africa 2026, the continent's premier gathering for the energy sector, water resources, and electrical power. This significant summit assembled industry leaders and key partners, including South Africa’s Eskom, Ghana's BPA, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), to discuss the theme of "Building the Energy Systems of the Future: Accommodating the Rising Productivity of Digital Intelligence."

Toward a Digitally Enhanced Future

Huawei utilized this platform to unveil its intelligent substation solution specifically designed for Sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative aims to accelerate the energy sector's digital transformation in the region. During the opening keynote, Wang Guoyu, Vice President of Huawei's Electric Power Digitalization BU, presented on "Promoting Collective Intelligence: Empowering the Future of the Energy System," emphasizing a shift toward a prosumer-oriented model as the new paradigm in energy transition.

He highlighted the transition of energy systems towards artificial intelligence as a crucial juncture. Communication, digitalization, and AI are redefining key energy systems, where AI and digital technologies have become pivotal in shaping the entire energy value chain, influencing everything from generation and transmission to distribution. Huawei envisions providing cutting-edge AI capabilities and reliable communication technologies to empower African utilities as they advance into a new AI-driven phase.

Launch of Intelligent Substation Solutions

At the summit, Huawei, alongside CIGRE and Zhuhai Unitech Power Technology Co., Ltd., introduced their intelligent substation solution aimed at providing sophisticated upgrades to substations across the continent. This launch underscores Huawei's commitment to facilitating smart modernization through strategic partnerships.

Several representatives from African utilities shared insights on the groundbreaking solutions. One representative mentioned, "This solution integrates intelligent video, AI algorithms, and secure wireless networks, replacing four key manual operations with intelligent automation: monitoring, inspection, meter reading, and analysis. This drastically reduces inspection times from days to minutes, leading to a 70% reduction in labor costs for operations and maintenance. Our partnership with Huawei has for the first time equipped our transmission network with comprehensive digital detection capabilities, transitioning us from reactive repairs to proactive alerts."

Advanced Wireless Communications

Following the summit, Huawei, together with CIGRE and the 450 MHz Alliance, convened a roundtable focused on private wireless networks and high-power telecommunications networks. Gösta Kallner, the Executive Chairman of the 450 MHz Alliance, emphasized the significance of private wireless networks for utilities, stating that they serve as a backbone ensuring reliable and sustainable operation of the power grid due to their wide coverage and diversified ecosystem ready for future evolution.

A representative from CIGRE pointed out that achieving an international standardization framework and sharing best practices globally is essential for accelerating the digital transformation of electric networks. All attendees agreed that establishing a pervasive, secure, and efficient energy communication infrastructure is vital to support new energy systems and achieve sustainable energy development in Africa.
