Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Launches Nutrition Project for Mothers and Children in Emali, Kenya

In a significant move to enhance community health and well-being, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Kenya Limited has initiated a transformative project titled 'Enhancing Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) and Sustainable Livelihood.' The project aims to improve nutrition outcomes and food security for vulnerable populations in Emali, a locality within the Makueni and Kajiado counties of Kenya.

The launch event held on June 26, 2025, attracted local community members, representatives from county governments, and officials from the Emali Dedicated Children's Agency (EDCA), signaling a united front in addressing urgent health issues affecting mothers and children. This initiative is a testament to Glenmark's ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive health solutions, building upon its previous efforts in urban areas like the Kibera slums of Nairobi.

The program is designed to cater to over 500 children enrolled in Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, alongside providing essential support to more than 300 pregnant and lactating women and over 240 vulnerable households. One of the key components of the initiative is the distribution of Vitamin A supplements and deworming treatments to an additional 2,000 children under five, delivered through community health outreach programs.

To effectively tackle maternal and child nutrition challenges, the project operates on three foundational pillars that aim to deliver both nutritional and economic support:
1. School Feeding Program: Nutritional meals will be provided through a structured school-based feeding program to ensure that children receive adequate nourishment during critical developmental stages.
2. Maternal-Child Health Improvement: Focused interventions will enhance maternal-child health through nutritional support and healthcare access, crucial for improving health outcomes.
3. Economic Empowerment: The introduction of poultry-based livelihoods is intended to bolster families’ food security, allowing them to achieve sustained economic independence.

Cheryl Pinto, Executive Director of Corporate Services at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd., expressed the organization’s philosophy, stating, "Health and well-being of children and mothers is a powerful way to build a healthier world. Our initiative in Emali, in partnership with EDCA, addresses critical challenges in child nutrition and maternal care, paving the way for empowered and enriched lives."

Supporting the initiative, Manish Bajaj, Country Manager for Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Kenya Ltd., emphasized the goal of sustainable impact aligned with Kenya Vision 2030 and its focus on health, nutrition, and livelihoods. He highlighted that the project represents a collective effort towards substantial change in the lives of children and mothers within the region.

The local government representatives, including Hon. Benard Moloma, acknowledged the timeliness of this project, aiming to bridge existing nutritional gaps exacerbated by evolving challenges such as droughts and inadequate healthcare access.

Moreover, the collaboration received accolades from Alex Kilowua, Kajiado County's Executive Committee Member for Medical Services and Public Health, who described it as an essential addition to ongoing efforts to combat maternal and child malnutrition, given the alarming statistics revealing that nearly one in four children under five suffer from stunting in the area.

Victor Aduda, CEO of EDCA, reiterated the importance of this partnership as it allows providing immediate nutritional aid while equipping families with tools for resilience through poultry farming and education. Such comprehensive approaches aim to create a robust framework for sustainable community development.

Speakers during the launch highlighted how multi-sectoral collaboration is vital to tackling malnutrition holistically. The project aligns with national goals for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, showcasing Glenmark and EDCA's commitment to integrating efforts aimed at fostering community ownership and policy integration.
