Art Auction 2025: An Unmissable Opportunity

Kashima Arts Co., Ltd. is thrilled to announce the 23rd Annual Art Auction 'MEGURU -MAIN SALE-', which will take place from August 23 to 31, 2025. This highly anticipated auction will highlight an impressive collection of 219 meticulously curated art pieces ranging from traditional Japanese paintings to contemporary works, featuring renowned artists like Ito Jakuchu, Uemura Shoen, and Katsushika Hokusai.

Since its inception in 2019, 'MEGURU' has evolved into one of Japan's premier art auctions, showcasing a rich diversity of art spanning various genres including Western paintings, sculptures, calligraphy, and crafts. Inaugurated two years ago with Vol. 15, the 'MAIN SALE' features only the finest artworks, making it a unique event cherished by art lovers both domestically and internationally. The upcoming Vol. 23 promises an exceptionally exceptional lineup, unmatched in both quality and rarity.

The auction will include masterpieces from celebrated artists of the Edo period such as Ito Jakuchu, Maruyama Okyo, Yosa Buson, and Hokusai, all the way through to modern figures like Yokoyama Taikan, Hirata Shunsō, Uemura Shoen, and Sekiho Hayami. Rare pieces like 'Japan's Cute Ink Painting' from Tokugawa Iemitsu, and remarkable works by notable figures such as Natsume Sōseki, are also featured.

Featured Artists and Works

  • - Ito Jakuchu: The auction includes nine works by Jakuchu, including pieces like 'Rooster Amidst Beans', which has even been showcased in a special exhibition at the Kyoto National Museum.
  • - Uemura Shoen: Her iconic painting 'Spring Light' captures the essence of grace and beauty, epitomizing her artistic pursuit.
  • - Yoshida Hiroshi: Renowned for his early woodblock prints, 'Shimmering Sea' is part of a series depicting the Seto Inland Sea, showcasing his exquisite craftsmanship.

Additionally, amusing and light-hearted ink paintings, such as Tokugawa Iemitsu's 'Wood Rabbit' and Sen'kō Guhō's 'Dog Buddha Nature', demonstrate the playful spirit embodied in Japanese art. Each piece, transcending realism, invites the viewer into a world of charm and character, reflecting the personal ethos of their creators.
