Brooklyn SolarWorks Pioneers Energy Storage with NYC's First Residential System
Brooklyn SolarWorks Pioneers Energy Storage in NYC
In a groundbreaking achievement for urban clean energy, Brooklyn SolarWorks has successfully completed the installation of New York City's first residential battery energy storage system (BESS). The installation, which took place in Chinatown, integrates a 19.6 kilowatt-hour battery with a solar canopy—making it a significant milestone for energy independence and sustainability in densely populated areas.
This innovative system, known as the Briggs & Stratton® AccESS™, is unique in that it is the only residential energy storage solution currently permitted for installation on rooftops throughout New York City. The battery system complements Brooklyn SolarWorks' patented solar canopy design, specifically crafted to maximize solar energy production in challenging urban environments.
For years, New York City has enforced strict regulations regarding energy storage systems, hindering similar projects. Brooklyn SolarWorks and Briggs & Stratton have collaborated tirelessly over an eight-year phase to not only navigate these complex regulations but to also assist in formulating the permitting framework for residential BESS installations in the city. This persistent effort culminated in a successful launch that opens doors for energy-efficient advancements across the five boroughs.
Sequoya Cross, Vice President of Energy Storage for Briggs & Stratton, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating, "Our AccESS system is the only residential ESS that has received a Certificate of Approval (COA) from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). This certificate is critical, given the rigorous fire safety requirements imposed on energy storage systems. These batteries present a much lower risk of thermal runaway, eliminating the need for additional fire suppression measures."
By integrating this residential battery energy storage system with solar panels, homeowners are empowered to optimize their energy consumption and reduce dependence on the conventional electrical grid. Furthermore, BESS serves as a critical foundation for grid stability, allowing homeowners to potentially earn financial incentives for discharging their stored energy during peak demand periods. Even now, these systems act as a safeguard against power outages, providing essential energy security.
T.R. Ludwig, founder and CEO of Brooklyn SolarWorks, expressed pride in this groundbreaking project: "This endeavor illustrates our dedication to innovative clean energy solutions for New York City. Our team pioneered rooftop solar installation nearly a decade ago, and now we are positioned to shape the future of battery energy storage, which will be vital as urban energy consumption continues to rise."
Bruce Langone, the owner of the building hosting the installation, remarked, "The integration of energy storage combined with solar creates a more resilient environment for New York City homes and enhances the robustness of our energy grid. This project paves the way for families across the boroughs to take control of their energy needs. I am thankful to both Brooklyn SolarWorks and Briggs & Stratton for their determination in making this vision a reality."
As a result of this collaboration, Brooklyn SolarWorks and Briggs & Stratton have set a new standard for battery energy installation in New York City, presenting viable options for homeowners seeking energy independence and contributing to the resilience of the city's energy infrastructure.
