Sonae Achieves Remarkable Growth and Record Sales

In an inspiring turn for multinational corporations, Sonae, based in Portugal and listed on Euronext Lisbon under the code SON, reported a remarkable 14.2% growth in revenue for the fiscal year ending 2025. The company managed to achieve a record revenue of €11.4 billion, reflecting the strength of its diversified portfolio that covers various sectors including retail, telecommunications, and real estate.

Driving Forces Behind Growth

A key factor contributing to this impressive growth has been the retail sector's stability, particularly the robust performance of Sonae's own brands across several European markets. The successful implementation of strategic investments and acquisitions over the previous two years has paved the way for sustained growth. The company's adjusted EBITDA reached a significant €1.1 billion, a 23.6% increase compared to 2024, showcasing operational efficiency and effective cost management strategies.

Moreover, Sonae's total EBITDA surged to €1.2 billion, marking a 17.6% increase, while the net income attributed to shareholders rose 11% to €247 million. Notably, the company’s stock price followed a positive trajectory, soaring an impressive 76% in 2025.

Insights from Leadership

Cláudia Azevedo, the CEO of Sonae, expressed her confidence in the company's strategic initiatives. She stated that Sonae's portfolio is well-positioned for long-term value creation, benefiting from a balanced approach across geographic regions and various sectors. This careful positioning allows Sonae's various business segments to thrive in markets characterized by robust structural growth factors. “We look to the future with optimism and confidence,” Azevedo remarked.

Sonae's Retail Dominance

Within the retail sphere, Sonae's brands maintain leading positions in many of their segments across Europe. The company's extensive retail network boasts more than 2,500 stores, with 128 new openings in the past year alone. In Portugal, the Continente brand remains the market leader in food retail, operating hypermarkets, supermarkets, and other convenience formats.

In the health and beauty sector, Sonae excels in Spain with Druni and Arenal, through a joint venture with the Casp family, while also leading in Portugal with Wells. In the electronics sector, Worten stands as the market leader in Portugal, extending its reach into Spain and beyond through its service and repair company iServices. The group’s fashion retail segment is dominated by Salsa, a renowned denim specialist present in around 50 countries.

Moreover, Sonae’s pet care brand, Musti, operates in seven regions and holds a leading market share in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

Real Estate Ventures and Technological Investments

Apart from retail, Sonae extends its influence in the real estate sector through its subsidiary Sierra, which develops and manages shopping centers and real estate projects, including office and residential spaces. In partnership with Bankinter, Sierra manages a fund that invests in real estate assets on the Iberian Peninsula. The acquisition of the real estate management sector from Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has positioned Sierra as the second-largest external shopping center operator in Germany.

Sonae’s investment arm, Bright Pixel, also plays a significant role by holding stakes in technology companies focused on retail, telecommunications, and cybersecurity solutions. Additionally, through its subsidiary Sparkfood, Sonae engages in providing natural extracts and active ingredients for human, animal, and plant care.

As Sonae continues to build on its successful growth trajectory, the company remains committed to innovation and excellence across its diverse portfolio. This growth narrative signifies not just a financial success but also reinforces Sonae’s commitment to sustainable and impactful business practices that resonate with customers and investors alike.
