Revolutionary Kitchen Trash Can 'SKETTO' Launches on Makuake to Combat Food Waste Odors

A New Era of Waste Management: Introducing SKETTO

In a ground-breaking move, Kosupak Laboratory has unveiled 'SKETTO', an ingenious kitchen trash can that redefines the common perception of waste storage. Instead of following conventional wisdom that suggests the best way to prevent odors is to seal garbage tightly, SKETTO utilizes unique ventilation technology to keep things fresh. Set to launch on Makuake in July 2026, this innovative product aims to assist busy households while addressing environmental issues.

The Birth of SKETTO

The development of SKETTO was inspired by a simple yet revolutionary idea: sealing waste can often worsen odor issues by encouraging the growth of anaerobic bacteria, notorious for their foul smell. By allowing air to flow through, SKETTO inhibits these microorganisms, tackling the odor problem at its roots.

With an impressive R&D budget of about 100 million yen, the project saw collaboration with noted designer Hiroshi Sekiguchi and a metal fabrication company from Niigata. The result is a trash can that doesn’t just mask odors but eliminates them at the source.

A Sustainable Approach to Waste Management

SKETTO serves as a solution to one of Japan’s pressing waste issues, particularly in Tokyo where waste disposal sites are rapidly filling up. Estimates suggest that the city’s last landfill could reach capacity in just 50 years. The SKETTO trash can effectively evaporates moisture from food waste and supports waste separation, ultimately leading to reduced waste generation. This reduction also diminishes the load on incineration facilities, thereby contributing to lowered CO2 emissions.

In a world where dual-income households are becoming increasingly common, SKETTO presents substantial benefits not only in easing household chores but also in fostering environmental sustainability. This inventive trash can has garnered recognition from the Tokyo Industrial Technology Research Institute, leading to inclusion in the esteemed 'Tokyo Monozukuri Movement 2025' program, which supports innovative products with funding of 10 million yen.

The Journey of Innovation: From Concept to Creation

The journey to SKETTO’s creation was sparked by feedback on a YouTube channel operated by the developer, Kechiei. With a background as a cleaner and household manager, Kechiei launched the 'Kosupak Laboratory' YouTube channel focusing on practical household tips. Her exposure to countless families revealed the social need for easier domestic management. Four years ago, she explored kitchen waste odor management and encouraged viewers to keep their trash cans open for ventilation. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, though many expressed concern about unwanted pests.

Resolving these concerns led to the 'ventilated trash can with a lid' concept, thus commencing the design of SKETTO. After experimenting with modified umbrella stands that functioned as vents, Kechiei discovered the immense difference ventilation made in controlling odors. The revelation that ventilation can mitigate smells mirrored principles seen in shoe and bedding care—challenging the rigid belief that seals were the only solution.

SKETTO’s Unique Features

SKETTO is not just a simple trash can; it incorporates a patented design that facilitates natural airflow, preventing temperature rise and consequently, odor formation. To maximize odor prevention, even components typically made of plastic in standard stainless steel trash bins are metal in SKETTO, drastically reducing odor absorption. Extensive usability tests, involving over 50 prototypes and multiple iterations of hooks, ensured user-centric design meets modern waste management needs, accommodating the growing need for separation systems.

Bringing SKETTO to Market

The project for SKETTO officially launches on Makuake under the title, “Effortlessly Prevent Food Waste Odors! A Patent-Achieved Trash Can, Five-Time Contest Winner, Straight from Niigata!” This offers customers a sustainable, odor-free trash management solution without electricity or chemical deodorants—an eco-friendly choice for modern households.

In Kechiei’s words, “My aim was to create a product that would help reduce the hassle of everyday chores and support environmentally friendly practices. I hope many households will embrace SKETTO.”

Now set to hit the market, SKETTO showcases that innovation does not always require complicated changes; sometimes, a fresh perspective is all that is needed.
