Celebrating 50 Years of Aoba Japan International School



Aoba Japan International School (A-JIS), a member of the Aoba-BBT group, will proudly celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. Founded in 1976 in Aobadai, Meguro, Tokyo, A-JIS has excelled in providing an International Baccalaureate (IB) education that nurtures future global leaders. In honor of this golden milestone, A-JIS has adopted the slogan "Leading Positive Change" and has planned various commemorative activities.

A 50-Year Journey



Since its inception, A-JIS has committed to creating an inclusive, coeducational environment that embraces students from diverse cultural and national backgrounds. The school has a rich history marked by significant milestones:

  • - 1976: A-JIS opened its doors as Aoba International School in Aobadai, Meguro, Tokyo.
  • - 1998: A-JIS merged with Japan International School, formally becoming Aoba Japan International School.
  • - 2012: The school established the Hikarigaoka Campus in Nerima, Tokyo.
  • - 2013: The foundation of A-JIS was strengthened with Aoba-BBT Group's involvement in its administration.
  • - 2015: The school was accredited for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) and Diploma Program (DP).
  • - 2016: The school received Middle Years Program (MYP) accreditation, offering a seamless IB education from kindergarten to high school.
  • - 2022: A-JIS launched the Bunkyo Campus, moving its high school division.
  • - 2024: A-JIS will start the Aoba Global Campus, Asia's first IB pilot site offering the Diploma Program completely online.
  • - 2027: Preparations are underway to open the Kanazawa Campus in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

Currently, A-JIS operates three campuses in Tokyo (Meguro, Hikarigaoka, and Bunkyo) and a global online campus, serving students from over 40 countries with high-standard education. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), with graduates successfully pursuing further education at universities worldwide, including in Japan.

Commemorative Events



To mark this special occasion, A-JIS is planning several initiatives, including:

1. Homecoming Event: On April 18, 2026, A-JIS will hold a "50th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration" at the Hikarigaoka Campus, inviting alumni, current students, and staff to reconnect and celebrate the school’s rich history.
2. Future-Oriented Programs: Throughout the anniversary year, various educational events and programs will be proposed to highlight the future of education. Details will be shared on the A-JIS website as they are confirmed.

About Aoba Japan International School (A-JIS)



A-JIS is operated by Aoba International Educational Systems, a subsidiary of Aoba-BBT, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Established in 1976, A-JIS caters to students from preschool to 12th grade (high school) as a secular coeducational international school, offering education primarily in English, with Japanese classes available.
