Avenues to Independence Unveils the Exciting Second Annual 'Walking for Avenues' Fundraiser

Avenues to Independence Hosts Second Annual 'Walking for Avenues'

Avenues to Independence, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is gearing up for its second annual Walk for Avenues. This year's event will take place on June 13, 2026, at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. Building on the triumph of the inaugural walk held in June 2025, the organization aims to raise an ambitious $100,000 to support essential services for its clients.

The inaugural walk exceeded expectations, with over 300 participants raising $80,000, setting a strong foundation for this year's fundraising campaign. This year, the organization hopes to harness that momentum, engaging even more community members to support a cause that touches the lives of many.

The Walking for Avenues event will feature a 2-mile course with an optional shorter path, designed to accommodate participants of varying ages and abilities. The walk is crafted to foster community spirit, uniting Avenues clients, their families, volunteers, staff, and local supporters. After the walk, a celebration will ensue, complete with music, activities, and refreshments.

Stephen Kray, CEO of Avenues to Independence, expressed his excitement about the event, stating, "Last year's walk demonstrated just how much our community believes in Avenues' mission. It was heartwarming to see families walking together alongside clients and supporters; the sense of connection was palpable. The funds raised will provide valuable opportunities for the adults we serve, whether that means finding meaningful employment, building friendships, or enjoying personal freedom in their choices."

The event will also incorporate a peer-to-peer fundraising component, encouraging families and supporters to form teams. This initiative allows participants to share their personal stories and rally support from friends and colleagues, a crucial strategy in achieving the fundraising goal.

Bob McNamara, Vice President of Development, highlighted the importance of the event by saying, "Walking for Avenues helps the community understand the genuine impact of our services. The funds we raise are critical in supporting over 200 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities each year. They will benefit from residential services, employment opportunities, and community programs that enhance their ability to live more independently and confidently."
