Rissho University’s 2026 Public Lecture Series: Imagination and Creativity

Starting September 26, 2026, Rissho University's Faculty of Letters in Tokyo will launch an engaging public lecture series titled “Imagination and Creativity.” In partnership with Shinagawa City, this unique program is tailored for anyone eager to delve into the power of the imagination through a multi-faceted lens.

The theme of this year's series revolves around the concept of 'Imagination and Creativity,' showcasing how fiction, such as anime and dramas, along with unseen aspects like fortune-telling and ghost stories, contribute to shaping our culture and reality. This thought-provoking event will take place over three Saturdays, inviting a variety of expert speakers to share insights that illuminate the strength of human creativity.

Lecture Schedule and Speakers

The event will consist of three sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of creativity:

Session 1: September 26, 2026
Title: Literature of 'Connections': Ghost Stories as a Means of Imagination and Creativity
Speaker: Mr. Bon Koizumi (Director of the Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum, Professor Emeritus, Shimane Prefectural University, and great-grandson of Koizumi Yakumo)
Discussion Partner: Akiko Kawasumi (Lecturer at Rissho University Faculty of Letters)
Overview: This session will explore ghost stories as a literary connection, highlighting the imagination and creativity associated with renowned author Koizumi Yakumo. Mr. Koizumi’s work focuses on employing ghost stories to enhance 'open-mindedness' in society. He will discuss his publications, including notable works on folklore and the cultural significance of Yōkai.

Session 2: October 3, 2026
Title: Connecting Stars and Hearts: The World of Astrology
Speaker: Mr. Ryuji Kagami (Astrology Researcher and Translator, Visiting Professor at Kyoto Bunkyo University)
Discussion Partner: Hiroshi Takeuchi (Professor at Rissho University Faculty of Letters)
Overview: In this session, Mr. Kagami will delve into astrology, revealing how imagination can connect celestial bodies with human emotions. His extensive bibliography includes the acclaimed works on Tarot and cultural astrology, providing a foundation for understanding the influences of stars on daily life.

Session 3: October 10, 2026
Title: Life and Imagination/Creativity
Speaker: Maho Shimao (Essayist)
Discussion Partner: Fumito Kimura (Associate Professor at Rissho University Faculty of Letters)
Overview: Maho Shimao will discuss the interplay between imagination and daily life experiences. With a diverse portfolio that spans from manga creation to essays, her insights will explore how personal narratives and creative expression shape our understanding of reality.

The public lectures will be held in the Rissho University Shinagawa Campus from 15:00 to 16:30 (doors open at 14:30). Participation is free, but prior registration is required.
