Beryl Institute Unveils Recipients of 2025 Patient Experience Grant Program
The Beryl Institute, recognized globally for its dedication to enhancing the human experience within healthcare, has recently unveiled the recipients for the 2025 Patient Experience Grant Program. This initiative reflects the Institute's ongoing commitment to fostering a dialogue surrounding the improvement of patient care and advocating for evidence-based practices that support better experiences for patients across the healthcare continuum.
This year's grant recipients include three innovative healthcare organizations and a doctoral scholar whose research aims to address various aspects of patient experience. Each project aligns with the Eight Strategic Lenses of the Experience Framework established by The Beryl Institute, ensuring that the findings contribute meaningfully to the broader understanding of how patient experiences can be improved.
Recipients and Their Research Focus
1. Hospital Clinic de Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain): This organization will investigate whether the transition experience of patients moving from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to hospital wards can be enhanced by identifying unmet needs through Patient-Reported Experience Measurements (PREMs). This study aims to discover actionable insights that can improve critical post-operative care.
2. CHI Health (Omaha, NE, USA): This research focuses on the impact of increased interactions with therapy pets within a structured pet therapy program. The study will examine how such interactions may positively influence the mood of both direct and indirect caregivers on an acute inpatient unit. By integrating therapy pets into healthcare settings, this initiative seeks to provide emotional support and improve the overall well-being of caregivers.
3. UC San Diego Health (San Diego, CA, USA): Their project will assess how a structured coaching and engagement program for dedicated bedside nurse champions can improve patient experience outcomes. The focus will be on critical HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) domains, including communication about medications, nurse responsiveness, and overall patient comfort. This study aims to refine nursing practices to elevate patient care standards.
Additionally, Purva Gulyani, a PhD candidate from La Trobe University (Bundoora, Victoria, Australia), has been recognized as a doctoral scholar. Her research will focus on the South Asian Dietary Assessment Tool and its effectiveness in providing a valid and reliable assessment of dietary intake and acculturation among South Asian migrants. This initiative is particularly relevant in understanding dietary needs and expectations within diverse populations, aiming to bridge cultural gaps in healthcare.
Future Implications
Upon completion of their projects, all grantees will disseminate their findings through The Beryl Institute and present their work at upcoming ELEVATE PX conferences. This will not only bring visibility to their research but also encourage the adoption of best practices across healthcare organizations.
As a pioneering entity in advancing the experience movement within healthcare, The Beryl Institute continues to offer invaluable resources that include unbiased research, proven practices, and networking opportunities aimed at transforming the patient experience. Their definition of patient experience encapsulates every interaction a patient has with healthcare systems, profoundly influenced by the culture and operations of those organizations.
In a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, these grants serve as crucial investments in knowledge and practice, seeking to refine how healthcare professionals understand and enhance the human experience for patients and their families.
