USRA Secures New Agreement to Enhance STEM Workforce with AFRL Scholars Program at Eglin AFB

Continued Support for STEM Workforce Development at Eglin AFB

The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) recently announced that it has secured a significant cooperative agreement to manage the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Scholars Program at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB). This initiative is designed to bolster the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) talent pipeline, which is crucial for fulfilling national defense priorities.

Since its inception in 2017, the AFRL Scholars Program has positively impacted 668 participants, offering them hands-on research experiences in highly specialized fields that are critical to the military's mission. The newly awarded agreement has an initial value of $2.5 million and will extend over five years, with the possibility of one-year extensions.

Paid Research Internships for Aspiring Scholars

One of the key features of the AFRL Scholars Program is that it offers paid research internships tailored for students ranging from high schoolers to graduate scholars. These interns collaborate with seasoned AFRL scientists and engineers, providing them with invaluable insights and practical experience essential for careers within defense research settings. Engaging with returning Scholars and alumni also helps strengthen connections in the STEM community and supports long-term workforce development in both defense and research sectors.

Bernie Seery, the Vice President of Science and Technology at USRA, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, "The continuation of the AFRL Scholars Program at Eglin underscores the importance of investing in future STEM leaders who will drive innovation in support of our nation's defense." With this new cooperative agreement, USRA aims to expand its collaboration with Eglin Air Force Base, an initiative that also complements the Faculty Fellowship Program by linking emerging talents with leading faculty in a cutting-edge research environment.

Impact on National Defense

The partnership between USRA and Eglin Air Force Base stands testament to the increasing emphasis on nurturing a skilled workforce that can address the future challenges in national defense. In the words of Brian Mitchell, Pipeline Coordinator at the Air Force Research Laboratory, "The AFRL Scholars Program provides meaningful research experiences that are significantly impactful to both the AFRL and the Air Force mission. Our continued partnership with USRA is crucial to attracting and equipping the next generation of scientists and engineers to advance critical research for national defense."

Moreover, Dr. Amanda Hackler Smith, Director of STEM Education Programs at USRA, highlighted the program’s commitment to fostering a workforce capable of tackling pressing national challenges. By connecting students with skilled mentors and providing meaningful research opportunities, the agreement enhances USRA's dedication to effective STEM workforce development.
