ICANN's 87th Public Meeting in Bali: A Global Internet Gathering

ICANN's 87th Public Meeting in Bali

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to host its 87th public meeting in Bali, Indonesia, from October 17 to 22, 2026. This significant gathering will mark the first time ICANN convenes in Indonesia, bringing together stakeholders from around the globe to engage in discussions essential for the future of Internet governance.

This flagship event will take place at the Bali International Convention Center, showcasing Bali's reputation as a premier destination for international conferences. The island previously hosted several major events, including the G20 Summit in 2022 and the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships in 2024, signaling its readiness to facilitate meaningful dialogues and foster global collaboration.

Kurtis Lindqvist, CEO of ICANN, expressed enthusiasm about the impending event, stating, "We are looking forward to reuniting with our global community in Bali for our annual general meeting. This meeting represents a fantastic opportunity to collaboratively advance policy development, enhance capabilities, and encourage participation within the ICANN community." He also highlighted that the first day of ICANN87 coincides with UNESCO's International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, emphasizing the rich cultural and linguistic diversity among ICANN stakeholders working towards a unified, interoperable Internet.

The conference will discuss pivotal topics related to the management of unique Internet identifiers, addressing recent developments such as the closure of submissions for the 2026 series of generic top-level domains (gTLDs) on August 12, when over 1,600 main applications were received. This high level of interest indicates the increasing significance of domains in shaping the digital landscape.

The unveiling day at ICANN87 will provide stakeholders with the chance to learn about the submitted strings and the relevant sections of the application files, facilitating discussions on the subsequent steps of the program. Furthermore, the inter-community group focused on review processes has made strides towards proposing enhancements that aim to bolster ICANN's accountability, transparency, and effectiveness in addressing challenges in the ever-evolving digital ecosystem.

Among other crucial themes on the agenda, participants will address malicious activities regarding the Domain Name System (DNS) and continue conversations on promoting a multilingual Internet while ensuring effective implementation of sanctioned policies. The annual Dr. Tarek Kamel Capacity Building Award will also be presented, recognizing individuals from the ICANN community who have significantly contributed to capacity building in alignment with ICANN's mission.

Registration for the public meetings is free and open to all, with pre-registration available until October 14, 2026. It's vital for interested participants to secure their attendance in advance, as on-site registration will not be permitted.

In essence, ICANN87 is positioned as a landmark event for Internet stakeholders, serving as a conduit for crucial discussions that will shape the direction of global Internet governance. With Indonesia's fast-growing digital ecosystem, the event underscores the nation's increasingly vital role in the Asia-Pacific Internet community.
