Breakthrough T1D Launches 'The State of T1D'
In recognition of World Diabetes Day on November 14, Breakthrough T1D, the preeminent global organization for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy, unveiled an essential new resource entitled "The State of T1D." This comprehensive compilation is intended to make critical statistics and information about T1D more accessible to the public.
The autoimmune condition T1D occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone vital for regulating blood sugar levels. Approximately 9.5 million people are currently living with T1D worldwide, with its prevalence on the rise. This newly launched resource aims to highlight not only the severe implications of T1D for individuals but also its broader impact on the healthcare system and society at large.
Aaron J. Kowalski, Ph.D., the CEO of Breakthrough T1D, articulated the necessity of having reliable data readily available, especially as cases of T1D continue to escalate globally. He noted, “As the number of type 1 diabetes cases grows, it’s important that reliable data and statistics on the condition are available at an arm's reach.” He also pointed out the organization’s commitment to addressing prevalent misconceptions about T1D through its campaign initiatives.
Following the successful collaboration last summer, which produced the first Barbie with type 1 diabetes, Breakthrough T1D aims to elevate public understanding of the condition. Kowalski stated, “The excitement around Barbie with T1D also elevated misunderstandings and misinformation about type 1 diabetes. In response to those concerns, we developed 'The State of T1D' to offer trustworthy, evidence-based information about type 1 diabetes.”

About Breakthrough T1D
Previously known as JDRF, Breakthrough T1D is the foremost global organization focused on T1D research and advocacy. Its mission revolves around improving daily life for those with type 1 diabetes while actively seeking cures. The organization invests in promising research, advocates for policies that will better the lives of those affected by T1D, and works to educate and empower individuals living with the condition.
Understanding Type 1 Diabetes
T1D is often misunderstood as a childhood disease; however, nearly 50% of all diagnoses occur in adults. The condition is unrelated to diet or lifestyle and its exact causes remain unclear, though researchers believe both genetic and environmental factors may contribute. Currently, there is no cure for T1D, and the focus remains on insulin therapy to manage the condition and mitigate potential long-term complications.
