Mikio Hasui's Exhibition 'Seventeen Portraits of the Sea' Comes to Fukuoka

Mikio Hasui's Exhibition 'Seventeen Portraits of the Sea'

Starting August 23, 2025, YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA, located at 2-1-4 Daimyo, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka, will host a special exhibition titled "Seventeen Portraits of the Sea" by the award-winning photographer Mikio Hasui. This exhibition follows the successful opening at the original YUGEN Gallery in Aoyama, Tokyo, in June 2025, which garnered significant attention and acclaim from the public and media.

Mikio Hasui is known for his profound connection with nature, and this exhibition is no exception. It showcases 17 unique photographs captured over one and a half years, focusing on 17 different nuclear power plants across Japan, excluding the under-construction Ohma Nuclear Power Plant in Aomori. These images are being displayed to the public for the first time, prompting viewers to reflect on the often-invisible risks associated with human endeavors and the impact of modern civilization on nature.

Hasui's work has always emphasized the theme of "natural principles," with an exploration of landscapes and nature that began in the early 1990s. His past series, such as "PEACE LAND" and "Yomu Shashin" (Reading Photographs), are housed in prestigious collections like the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This exhibition represents a unique challenge for Hasui as he shifts his focus to the seas of Japan, examining our relationship with the contemporary reality of nuclear power.

As visitors stroll through the exhibits, they will be invited to ponder the essence of coexistence with nature, particularly in landscapes devoid of human presence. The tranquility and depth of Hasui's images compel viewers to ask themselves profound questions about our place within the natural world, making this exhibition a must-see.
