Buffalo's LS700 Series Achieves JC-STAR Certification



Buffalo Inc., headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced that its LS700 Series of network-attached storage (NAS) devices has successfully met the requirements of the new IoT product security certification system known as JC-STAR. This initiative is overseen by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and implemented by the Independent Administrative Institution Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA). To qualify for the certification, users must ensure that they are using the latest firmware for their devices.

The JC-STAR certification was introduced to enhance the cybersecurity posture of IoT products as their proliferation increases globally. Beginning in March 2025, the JC-STAR program will provide a framework for assessing and labeling the security levels of IoT devices, helping consumers make informed decisions about the products they purchase. Buffalo has been proactive in pursuing this certification since the program's inception, striving to build a portfolio of compliant products for both small office/home office (SOHO) end-users and individual consumers.

Buffalo's LS700 Series includes several models to cater to different needs. For example, the LS720DNB series is designed for small offices and offers a dual-drive configuration, providing high-speed 2.5GbE connectivity at prices starting from 58,960 yen (excluding tax). Meanwhile, the LS710DNB series includes a single-drive option, starting at 31,790 yen (excluding tax). On the consumer side, the LS720D series and LS710D series also feature dual and single-drive configurations, priced from 39,050 yen (excluding tax) and 23,980 yen (excluding tax), respectively.

The devices that have received the JC-STAR certification carry the registration number 2025119900001088 and are assessed at Level 1, indicating their adherence to the security requirements laid out by the program. The initiative signals an important shift towards prioritizing security in the ever-evolving landscape of IoT products. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, having a reliable certification helps consumers feel more at ease with their digital environments.
