CPKC Partners to Enhance Rail Safety Awareness
From September 15 to 21, 2025, North America acknowledges Rail Safety Week with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) joining forces with Operation Lifesaver Canada (OL) and Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) in the United States. This initiative aims to bolster safety awareness around railroads, ensuring that communities understand the significance of staying vigilant and informed.
Dale Ruzycki, Chief of Police for CPKC Canada, emphasized the importance of the campaign, stating, "Rail safety is a priority at CPKC. We remain focused on public education across our network on how to stay safe around tracks and trains. Our goal is that everyone has the knowledge to make safe choices and get home safely each day."
Importance of Safety Education
Kelly Clough, CPKC's Chief of Police for the U.S., underscored the vital role that safety education plays in preventing accidents. "'See Tracks? Think Train® Week' serves as an important opportunity to inform the public about the risks associated with dangerous behaviors around railways and emphasizes that safety should be a priority for all," he stated.
Through partnerships with Operation Lifesaver and various community organizations, CPKC aims to foster awareness of safety protocols that can significantly reduce incidents of trespassing and other railway-related dangers.
Chris Day, National Director of Operation Lifesaver Canada, reiterated the collective responsibility of the public, saying, "Every incident, every injury, every death related to trespassing is preventable. Our goal is to reach zero incidents. Rail Safety Week is an opportunity for us to remind Canadians that rail safety is a shared responsibility."
In addition, Rachel Maleh, Executive Director of OLI, remarked, "Rail safety education is vital for everyone—whether you're driving, walking, or riding near the tracks. 'See Tracks? Think Train® Week' reminds us that making safe choices can save lives. CPKC's collaboration in raising awareness and promoting safe behaviors around trains is commendable."
Key Safety Reminders
The campaign also serves to alert the public of common dangerous behaviors. Unfortunately, many individuals, including children and teens, can be seen walking on tracks, using them as shortcuts, or posing for photos. To prevent accidents, the following safety tips are essential:
- - Never walk or take photos along train tracks. Walking on or near the tracks is illegal and dangerous.
- - Cross tracks only at designated locations. Always use marked crossings that have crossbucks, lights, or gates.
- - Always look for signals. Be vigilant; check for flashing lights and look both ways before crossing.
- - Wait for trains to pass completely. If lights are flashing or gates are down, remain patient until the train has completely passed.
- - Never attempt to beat the train. Even if you're in a hurry, do not risk crossing ahead of an approaching train.
- - In case of emergencies, contact CPKC Police at 1-800-716-9132.
Future Outreach in Mexico
The rail safety initiative is not limited to Canada and the U.S., as CPKC de México will participate in Rail Safety Week from September 22 to 27, 2025. Employee volunteers will deliver safety programs to schools and museums, educating pedestrians and motorists on the importance of rail safety.
