A Meaningful Collaboration: Asurion and Cell Phones for Soldiers
In a commendable effort to support veterans,
Asurion, a leading tech care company, and
Cell Phones for Soldiers, a nonprofit organization, have teamed up to donate
775 smartphones to veterans in Middle Tennessee. This initiative aims to enhance veterans' access to essential resources, family connections, healthcare, and job opportunities, ultimately combating the isolation they often face.
The Impetus Behind the Donation
The partnership embodies a mission that
Cell Phones for Soldiers has been dedicated to since its inception in 2004: ensuring that no military member feels disconnected from their loved ones. Robbie Bergquist, co-founder of Cell Phones for Soldiers, emphasized that this collaboration will greatly extend their reach in Tennessee, facilitating the reconnection of veterans with critical support systems.
The statistics speak volumes: on average,
22 veterans succumb to suicide daily, often due to feelings of isolation. By providing free smartphones and service, Asurion and Cell Phones for Soldiers are delivering a lifeline that connects veterans with healthcare providers, potential employers, housing assistance, and families, offering them a crucial support network during vulnerable times.
Expanding Reach and Impact
Currently,
Cell Phones for Soldiers issues free smartphones and a year of unlimited service to over
4,500 veterans each month across the United States. With the success of this donation, the organization anticipates supporting nearly
20,000 veterans by the end of 2026. The recent collaboration with
We Are Building Lives, a local nonprofit focused on ending veteran homelessness, reinforces this initiative. The smartphones will be instrumental for veterans participating in the Academy Program of We Are Building Lives, assisting them while they transition back into civilian life.
Jeff Upton, Executive Director of We Are Building Lives, pointed out that many veterans enter their program without a phone, making this access essential for staying engaged, informed, and supported during their critical transition period.
Commitment to Military Families
Asurion’s dedication to improving the lives of veterans reflects a broader commitment to military families residing in the communities they serve. Guru Gowrappan, CEO of Asurion, noted the pivotal role technology plays in maintaining connections. By providing smartphones, the company aims to alleviate housing instability and health-related challenges faced by veterans.
“Our partnership with Cell Phones for Soldiers ensures that those who have served our country maintain the connections they deserve,” Gowrappan stated, underlining the importance of creating a positive impact in local communities.
