AltaPointe Health Unveils Major $15 Million Expansion of BayPointe Hospital to Enhance Mental Health Services

In a significant move to enhance mental health care accessibility, AltaPointe Health held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday to celebrate the completion of a $15 million expansion at BayPointe Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. This expansion introduces 34 new adult psychiatric beds, increasing the hospital's total capacity from 104 to 138 beds. This initiative aims at addressing the urgent need for more inpatient psychiatric services in the region, serving the adult population effectively.

The event was attended by various state lawmakers, local officials, board members of AltaPointe Health, and community representatives, all coming together to mark this critical achievement in behavioral health. Tuerk Schlesinger, the CEO of AltaPointe Health, expressed gratitude towards the Mobile County Commission for their support, which included a contribution of $6 million from the American Rescue Plan Act towards the expansion project. He noted, "This expansion represents much more than additional beds. It represents greater access to care for people in our community when they need it most."

For years, Mobile County faced challenges in providing adequate psychiatric services to adults, as many local facilities concentrated on juvenile and geriatric care. The newly added beds will not only accommodate adult patients but will also relieve pressure on existing facilities, allowing BayPointe Hospital to maintain its focus on pediatric and adolescent psychiatric care by converting 24 beds previously designated for children into adult use.

In addition to the new beds, the expansion also includes additional classroom space for patients undergoing treatment, emphasizing the hospital's commitment to support educational initiatives alongside mental health care. Furthermore, the facility will also assist individuals referred for psychiatric evaluations by local probate courts, furthering its role as a comprehensive mental health resource.

BayPointe Hospital operates as one of the two freestanding psychiatric hospitals under the banner of AltaPointe Health. The organization's other location, EastPointe Hospital, is situated in Daphne. Together, these facilities form a cohesive network that encompasses a 24/7 behavioral health crisis center, community behavioral health clinics, and integrated primary care services, outlining a broad spectrum of mental health support.

With over 1.9 million services delivered annually to approximately 45,000 patients across seven counties in Alabama, AltaPointe Health aims to provide both behavioral and primary health care. The organization emphasizes integrated approaches to health care, ensuring comprehensive support is available to individuals and families in need.
